Marion Barry Speaks Out Against DC Same Sex Marriage
WMAL ^ | 29 April, 2009 | Incredulous Joe

(Washington, DC) -- DC Council member Marion Barry was among those who spoke at a rally Tuesday at Freedom Plaza in protest of proposed legislation that would recognize out-of-state same sex marriages in the District.

The demonstration was organized by the High Impact Leadership Coalition, a loosely-based group made up of Christians and clergy members. Barry told a group of dozens of protesters that he is against gay marriage. The Council is due to take up the legislation May 5th. If approved, it would have to go before Congress for its approval. For that reason, some feel the DC issue could have national implications.

I agree with Marion Barry.

The end is near, repent, repent.

Truth be told, Marion and all his buddies in the High Impact Leadership Coalition have already been married to the gay mafia for years.

How much reaping can we sow?

He is now hereby disqualified from living in the People’s Republic of Des Moines - “is that a corn cob in your pink bib-overalls or are you just happy to see me?” or from competing in the Miss America contest. I certainly hope he thought about those things before speaking out.

Marion Barry is a comic genius.

I'm surprised he hasn't been appointed to one of Obama’s cabinet level posts.

God knows he meets the standards for paying his taxes.

I guess this means he’s not planning on entering the Miss USA pageant any time soon.

A lefty like Barry’s opposition to same sex marriage demonstrates two important points:

1) Opposition to same sex marriage is certainly not an out of the mainstream view, the way the media would like to potray it.

2) If the GOP wants to expand its base and win elections, the worst thing to do would be abandoning its pro-life and anti-same sex marriage positions. A majority of black and hispanic voters share Barry’s opposition to same sex marriage.

One can only hope that this attraction the Dem's have with Islam and how their lifestyles conflict with it, could split up the party in the very near future. A little ray of sunshine on a dark and stormy horizon :)

I have spoken with pro-life, Christian, blacks who want more opportunity for their own children and want out of the public school system; they won't quit the Dems.

Don't break a synapse trying to figure it.

I don’t know that I not call it an attraction, it is a lack of understanding of the genuine danger of Islam, or an eagerness to blame America. It’s naivety.

I think the British Libs are way ahead of us in this area.

Unfortunately, the Conservatives are still out of power there and I don’t know that there is a light at the end of their tunnel.

Did you ask them why? I have.

1. They don’t have the will to fight families and friends who are dems.

2. They don’t trust the republicans to do what they say. They think there is not a dime’s worth of difference between the republicans and the democrats and based on the Rockefellers and Romneys who currently run the party, I have no argument to make to dissuade them.

Instead of running away from Ronald Reagan, this party should be shouting his principles on the rooftops. They should politely smack down members who can’t seem to understand that republicans should stand for something other than dem lite and forcefully work to see that those who don’t support its principles don’t stay around for long. (Such as Specter and his cronies)

Unfortunately too many republicans dislike Reagan’s beliefs so much they will do anything to hide what he stood for and cannot bring themselves to even attempt to learn to articulate his beliefs. As long as these republican leaders continue to refuse conservative ideas, the world will only see the duplicitous disconnect of these leaders from the party’s conservative grassroots.

If the party truly identified with conservative principles and allowed itself to be identified by them, then you would see more black people willing to put up with family and friend upheaval in order to stand up for what is right.

“Did you ask them why? I have.”

Actually, I was thinking that I had these discussions with black Christians back when I worked in Baltimore. When I think about it doesn’t seem that long, but has been about 9 or 10 years now. The chats that I had were usually informal and Christian brother to Christian brother, so these were not contentious political smackdowns. Just sharing faith.

I could not then, and still do not, understand how a Christian could support a political ideology that is so radically pro-abort. It doesn’t add up. If I had the opportunity I sincerely wanted this explained to me in a sensible and rational manner.

Then, as today, such an explanation is not possible.

I’m attached to a pretty conservative Catholic parish, so I don’t know so many of the Catholic Obama voters. There might be a few in my church. I’ve only seen 2 bumper stickers in the church lot. Regardless, word on the street is that many Catholics have turned there backs to the pro-life message. In fact, I’m certain that more than 50-60% of this demographic are probably not churchgoers. Maybe another 15% were stupid enough to be hoodwinked by Obama’s rhetoric.

“1. They don’t have the will to fight families and friends who are dems.”

Possibly so. The same could be said of my Irish-Catholic family 30 years ago. Today, predominantly conservative with outliers of a few union workers and the odd communist. But there are enough on either side of the argument that one could not be dogpiled as I imagine a black conservative would be. Regardless of family squabbles one can always vote their conscience in the voting booth.

“Instead of running away from Ronald Reagan, this party should be shouting his principles on the rooftops.”

I wish this were the case, but a Reagan conservative would never win statewide in Maryland, or at least not right now. Maybe after the libs completely break and bankrupt the state. It’s very far to the left. I think it may work in states that are not as dogmatically liberal, but I don’t think it will here, at least right now. Many Freeps that I know who live in more conservative areas can’t get their heads around this. I never bought into the theory of “conservatism winning everywhere”; if that were true Santorum and Allen would still preside in the US Senate. PA wasn’t close and Allen lost in what was a conservative state with a lot of free help from the Washington Post, of course. Toomey will face an uphill battle in PA, whether the Dems throw Specter under the bus or not. They control the voting boxes in Pittsburg and Philly, that is half the battle for them.

I’m in a very blue state and would give my left arm for my old “moderate” Republican Governor, Bob Ehrlich, who was much hated by folks in the conservative Orthodoxy. But in my eyes, pretty conservative, and a hell of a lot better than what we have now. In the end it didn’t really matter. The Dems carved up the voting districts in Maryland to ensure they would win. Conservatives who refused to vote for Ehrlich make up such a small segment of the electorate that they didn’t really matter.

There are very few conservative voices in Maryland. My congressman is great, Roscoe Bartlett. Andy Harris, a state senator just narrowly missed winning the first district in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore. Now there is a Dem in there paying favors out for his next election, even though his values do not reflect those of that district. Hopefully, he can be defeated in 2010.

“Unfortunately too many republicans dislike Reagan’s beliefs”

I’m not sure if that’s true. Most don’t understand them. We could benefit by re-educating at the grassroots. Regardless, we have a bunch of young people who are voting and who don’t understand basic earth science (Global Warming), biology (abortion) or civics (taxation and 2nd Amendment). There is much to do.

I think Reagan’s strength came from building coalitions of support from people who might not always agree with each other’s cause. There are 3 basic legs to the conservative tripod; national defense, smaller government and personal responsibility. I know many Republicans who may only really care about one or two of those “legs”. We need someone who can draw all three together, without compromising the other. I know more than a few Pubbies who care about nothing more than what is in their own pocket and I know pro-lifers who don’t even go to other issues on the conservative lexicon or even think about them. I used to have no interest in the 2nd Amendment, but I’ve tried to understand their mindset and learn from guns rights advocates. They know their stuff and can communicate it better than any other demographic. Some small portion are a bit rabid and contentious, but one to one they do a great job of communicating “good sense” of gun ownership. As conservatives, we should be able to talk a better game, educate others without alienating them. Mostly, I think conservatism is just common sense. It shouldn’t be that hard and you should not have to apologize for it or be afraid to face a gang of big mouthed liberal ideologues. When I wasn’t educated, I was timid about stepping forth with my political ideas.

Personally, I really liked Bush 43, but he was really a very poor leader because he never advocated for what he believed in. He should have used the office of POTUS to move a conservative agenda to communicate the points of conservatism to the masses. Unfortunately, I don’t think he believed in this and, certainly, he did not have it in him. He was not a true conservative.

We’ve got a lot of work to do. Lot’s of conservatives and pubbies throwing bricks at each other all the time. Ought to spend some time working against “the man”, Barack. I think the TEA Parties are a sign of hope for the future; being positive and optimistic (even in the face of tall odds) are 2 of my favorite conservative virtues. I hope that we see more of them in the future and more things like them ~ organic and grassroots.
