This strange almost perfect 'ice circle' has appeared on a frozen lake in Siberia. While scientists have ruled out UFO involvement, they are puzzled as to how the mysterious, 2.5mile-wide geological phenomenon has formed in Lake Baikal. It was spotted at the southern edge of the lake while another was seen near the centre. The images were taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station circling 220 miles above Earth.

Hot spot below?? Old Mountain top?
The cracks say the volume is shrinking?? From heat??
To: JoeProBono
Interesting. I’m suspecting some kind of current. I’ve got a book of Michigan mysteries that shows the mysterious ice circles on a lake near my home.

Do the circles look the same? I wonder if the second circle in the picture also has cracks.

That is one of the Russkies nuclear torpedoes that they were testing during the cold war. Many of the torpedoes malfunctioned and went to the bottom where they were unrecoverable. The heat generated by the plutonium causes a change in the water temperature at the surface. These circles will appear for 250 million years and then suddenly disappear. Not to worry though, we have a trillion plus dollar debt.

I'm tired of your UFO posts. I guess it falls into the category of humor. But while we're at it, I am not particularly happy with your (Joe) posting of images from private registration websites. If you are going to post images, please try to use imageshack or a website from the media or any other site that has a public "whois" owner rather than one labelled "private registration". All views of the images (i.e. the thread that it is on) are tracked by the owner of the site. The time of the image view can be easily correlated with the time of a posting thereby identifying the IP address of the poster.

Ice circles are not that uncommon. You just have to be there with a camera at the right time. Now that camera phones are so common, there are many of these being photographed.

No, No, No!. These circles are made when a class B intergalactic explorer lands on earth with a defective anti-gravity cooling modulator. That is why they landed on the ice in the first place. It’s standard proceedure for them. Sheesh can’t you people do a little research.

Unusual that the photo carries a NASA “copyright”. I thought that all images from our government were copyright free. Same with government publications (many people published the Warren Report of the JFK assassination, for example).
You can contact the Library of Congress for thousands of reproducable images from other sources we funded as well.
You may have to give credit, but it isn’t a copyright.

I know nothing about this so I'll opine.;-) I would think that the presence of underwater springs in a spring fed lake could cause a uniform thawing of ice in a circular shape. If the temperature then dipped low enough, this area could refreeze. Why it would apparently freeze from the center out, I don't know, since I know nothing about this anyway.;-)

Yeah, they’re apparently entirely natural since they seem to be pretty common. I did a quick goole image search and found lots of pictures of ice circles all over the place.
