Good Morning everyone :)
My garden is sprouting all over after warm days and rain.
For the heck of it I tried putting some taters in and they came up!!
I had the same thing with my indoor tomatoes but 2 days of rain and they have tripled in size.
Hey I wish some of the trees around here would learn to go dorment in the summer so I could have a bunck of brown to balance out the green! My wife thinks I am nuts when I mow the grass and then dump all the clippings on the driveway and let it bake in the sun for a few days and then run the mower over it to pick it all back up and dump it on my compost pile!
Let me think for a second.
Where do you live? A cool climate where your clippings need to be “baked?” If you’re in a warm climate, this is a waste of time, dear.
Compost requires green stuff AND brown stuff. It also requires a handful of lime (gypsum) and water. What are you
trying to do, here, chief?
I grew up on the back of a golf cart. Every Sunday, for my entire childhood, I went on “the tour.” My dad was a golf course superintendent. Never did I see anyone collect grass clippings, for any reason.
HiramQuick has a neat way of growing potatoes. Maybe he will share it again. I would like to know if it would work for sweet potatoes also. I saw some plants at the Co-Op a couple of days ago and would like to try them.
Usually, I snap and eat.
I get seeds from Territorial and really like them.
I don’t recall where I got my garlic from, but the selection was overwhelming. I finally picked one that I figured would do well in our climate and planted them in the fall.
They are going gangbusters this spring. Some even have two flower spikes coming up, much like any bulb that divides would.
I won’t be depending on Chinese garlic this year. I’m thinking that they just might make good Christmas gifts to my inlaws who like to cook with garlic a lot. Nice, homegrown, organic garlic.
When grass clippings are all you have, that is what you use!
It was exciting when they come up. This is my first real attempt at growing food lol. My black thumb hasn’t done much for indoor plants. ;)
Our squash, peas, beans, cukes, onions and zuchinnis are all coming up and growing nicely. I even tossed in some pumpkins for the kids and they popped up the last few days.

Anyone who is familiar with the climate here in Nashville, TN-zone 6-I need some advice. Never grown carrots. Do you think it is too late to start carrots? Can they be started in trays or should they be started in the ground?
Any thoughts?

I’m NC. Probably not quite as hot, but anyway, I keep several garlics in pots all year around. If I let them go to seed, they “escape” and then I dig up the seedlings. Thus far, this has worked for me. Just did down in the pot a bit and see if anything is the right size to harvest.
I’ve planted society garlic with my roses. They both do fine.
Got all my tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in, just got tomatillos, groundcherries and other oddball tomato relatives left.
Spring stuff looks good for the most part, summer stuff germinating pretty well.
Lots of weeding and staking on tap for next week.
How about ideas on rabbit control other than my Ruger 10/22? I planted some Purple Bell Peppers last week and of 18, a rabbit got five the first night.
Lived here three years, this is an odd spring, but statistically may be more normal as there has been drought since I lived here - first spring officially out of drought.
We got through Mother’s Day without a hailstorm, a first for me.
We are moving, so I am digging up things - this includes about 200 rose bushes. Some are moving with me, some are being discarded and some are going to live with others. I’m also digging up a lot of other plants. The place looks like a wholesale nursery right now.
Started three kinds of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in the little greenhouse. Hubby added water and heat and they really got off to a good start. Interesting to see how the tomatoes do since it is so much wetter and cooler.
Started a bunch of flowers from seeds also - got surprisingly good results.
Some new dahlias this year that are standing up straight and are already blooming (in pots which may be the secret). My MIL lives with us - loves those dahlias. The ones I planted in the ground, fell over and crawled around like vines. I guess they need more support that I offered.
Went camping up in the mountains in TN several weeks ago - waterfall down in a gorge. The rock walls around the river were covered with hundreds of the fern leafed bleeding hearts. It was glorious to see.
I understand rabbits will avoid the smell of marigolds, dog hair and human urine.
Your one acre garden plot would be my whole yard! Were you growing for market?
I had a scare this week. The tomatoes I started indoors were gradually moved for longer periods onto the back deck. I have planted a few and am leaving the rest on the deck all day and night. The other day I went to bed and the temperature here in zone 4, 8500 ft elevation in the Colorado Rockies was in the mid 40’s. When I woke up the next morning the temps had plummited and there was frost covering my deck. My digital outdoor thermometer showed it had gotten down to 31F. Luckily the tomatoes were close enough to the sliding glass doors that they stayed above freezing and the ones I planted somehow survived too! I have those extra 4th of July tomatoe seeds that I can send you for next year’s garden. Will let you know how mine do.
I ordered some blossom set spray for tomatoes and vegetables that I mail ordered from Jumgs. I plan to try it on tomatoes and squash becausi I am worried about blossom drop with all the windy days here in the Colorado Rockies.
