Move Over, BlackBerry Thumb, Guitar Hero Wrist And Carpal Tunnel!

(CBS)

You've heard of Blackberry Thumb, Guitar Hero Wrist and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The latest over-use or repetitive motion injury to join the Digital Age list is Cell Phone Elbow, says CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jennifer Ashton.

It's known in the medical community as Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Ashton said on The Early Show Wednesday.

It's caused by too much bending of your arm to put a cell phone to your ear, Ashton explains. That compresses the ulnar nerve, which runs along the bony bump on the inside of the elbow. Pressure on the nerve causes it to get compressed like a garden hose. Of course, when that happens to a hose, it impedes the flow of water. It's the same when the elbow is constantly flexed: It impairs blood flow and causes pain, typically in the lateral part of the ring finger and then your pinkie. And it can be debilitating.

If I get cut off by one more idiot using his cell while driving, it isn’t in their elbow that the cell phone will be hurting...

Shouldn’t this already have manifested as “beer elbow” long ago?

you don’t hold a beer to your face continuously for 2 hours straight. some people do hold a phone continuously to their face for that long.

So are members of our honorable “legal” profession out there suing cell phone manufacturers yet?

Oh, that's a constant movement rather than fixed in place. My elbow used to get stiff when I held my babies for long periods of time. Sometimes it still happens if I'm reading a lot.

How is this different for your elbow compared to using a traditional phone for hours at a time? People have been doing that for over 50 years.

Has anyone else noticed pain in their index finger, the finger used in an extended mode to cradle the cell phone while talking? Perhaps a bunch of us with this problem could arrange a class action suit against cell phone makers.
This is a serious problem and I am now totally disabled now because of it. I can’t write or type, make meals, drive or participate in sex. I have difficulty dressing and undressing and can’t do many other routine things requiring a good index finger. A friend is typing this for me. My doctor is calling this ailment cell finger syndrom. /s
