U.S. Open fans heckle Tiger Woods (Why now after all this time?)
News Day ^ | 6/20/2009 | JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER AND PATRICK WHITTLE

Beer-sodden fans and rain combined for an ugly finish to a long day of golf yesterday, with Tiger Woods and other golfers subjected to drunken heckling as the action at Bethpage Black came to a close.

At 6:42 p.m., dozens of drunken spectators at Hole 10 taunted Woods as he prepared to start his third round in the rain.

"We're on Long Island, baby, where men are men!" one fan yelled. "Put that umbrella down!"

The taunts were mixed with cheers from the majority of the crowd. Woods did not respond to the people who were heckling him but tried to quiet the crowd with a "sshh" hand gesture, putting his finger to his lips, as golfers prepared to tee off on the adjacent 12th tee.

"Suck it up, you've got your own video game!" someone shouted at Woods.

Some fans, apparently disgusted by the hecklers' behavior, walked away from the hole. Others told the vocal contingent to quiet down, which had no effect on the verbal abuse.

This seems really odd, I’ve been to the Open and they expect decent behavior from the gallery. Of course, it wasn’t in New York, famous for boorish fans.

And yes, that was my point: in baseball, 35% chance of success puts you into the Hall of Fame (generally), but in golf 35% makes you a failure.

(Sorry to all the golfers out there--myself included--who would celebrate themselves into oblivion if they succeeded at 35% of their shots).

Thats not heckling.

Heckling is having 35000 RedSox fans at Fenway Park yelling “YOUR ON STEROIDS” when ARod steps up to the plate.

I think the heckling is crass-golf is, or used to be a game for gentlemen.

That being said, plenty of Tiger’s fans are pretty boorish themselves—not to mention Woods’ own occasional lack of decorum and his thug caddy.

I remember a few years ago when one fan in the crowd was taunting Davis Love III over and over with anti-Love and pro-Tiger rants till Love complained. The libtard sport presstitutes snarked about how “thin-skinned “ Love was. I guess when their boy is heckled they feel differently. Oh well, one more sport ruined.....

Golf is unwatchable these days. With the loudmouths in the gallery just waiting to unleash their stupid shoutings - it’s more about them than the golfers. I’m a longtime golf fan, but I’ve given it up.

It’s a very fair assumption to make. If you had actually played other sports at a competitive level, you would not find much fault in my posts about golf.

Here’s a novel idea! How about just filming the golfers as they play, with NO crowds allowed?

“What are baseball players aiming AT?”?

I assume from your comment that you are attempting to attach more difficulty to the task of hitting a stationary golf ball to attempting to hit a 93 mph ball coming at you, and perhaps on occasion coming at your head. Or the next pitch which drops 14 inches over the last ten feet of it’s flight. Golf is a joke, compared to the real sports. And golfers are lightweights, demanding complete quiet so they can make their shots. What wusses.

"Get in the hole!"

That is what I feel like telling some of the "fans".

You playing XBox doesn't count.

Besides, you are not playing to pay for your meal ticket. These guys are professionals. Not all of them are as good as Tiger(I bet you wish you were that good at anything.), and spend every week going from one tourney to the next to pay for homes, families, etc. Most of what they earn goes into fees, caddy, room and board PLUS the wife, the homes, and kids.

Each sport has it's own crowd, baseball one type, football another, same with tennis. If you think the players at golf tourneys are wussies, go to a professional tennis tourney. Or is that not competitive enough for you? The crowds are commanded to be quiet.

I've played all kinds of competitive sports, learned to tune out noise, so it never bothered me, but I wasn't there for a paycheck either. I've also caddyed for some great players on the Senior Tour. Jim Dent was one who could care less about noise, but he could knock the paint off the ball anyway. Another was Chi Chi Rodriguez, and he had a horde of kids cheering him around the links. Noise made him play better.

It's a whole lot different when cash is on the line.

No, I am attaching the absurdity of your claim that you can compare baseball with golf. And I am a baseball fan, and not a golf fan.

Welcome to politics Mr. Woods. Should have kept your mouth shut!!!

Were you born stupid or did you work on it all your life? Guess all the other golfers were Obama supporters too as you claim.......

Tiger Woods and other golfers subjected to drunken heckling...

First of all, you have no proof that Woods was an Obama supporter. And if so, so what? Isn't a professional golfer, baseball player, football player, accountant, brick layer, carpenter, electrician or Wal Mart Greeter entitled to their political beliefs without ridicule by drunken assholes and their supporters - you?

Take a break my friend, there is more to life than underwear, computers and politics. Put some clothes on, step outside in the sunshine and just chill out............

Woods interjected politics into the sport, this is an expected consequence.

He did? Care to explain when, where and how? I haven't seen him wear an Obama shirt yet..........

I would be willing to bet that Tiger's (Celebrity Endorsement) of Barry is driving this.

since there is no evidence of Woods "endorsing" Obama, maybe the drunk assholes were democrats and were pissed at Woods NOT endorsing Obama...........

Or maybe they were just relatives of yours...........So many questions, so few answers. LOL!

Let’s see Tiger Woods step up to the ball on 18 with an opposing fan base doing everything they can to distract him and root against him........like every guy in the Major Leagues has to deal with all season long.

LOL, whatever. Like I said, it's a different game. Maybe you want all games to be "equal"? There's a whole political movement behind that concept, I'm sure they'll agree with you.

And yeah, Tiger, what a wimp. /s

No, I don’t want all games to be “equal” and I know they are not. I readily acknowledge that a sport like baseball is vastly more difficult, competitive, dangerous, challenging and played under far more difficult circumstances for the athlete than a sport like golf. Or something like the opera. But the point of my original post is accurate, that you would never read an article making a big deal out of drunk fans heckling an athlete in baseball, football, basketball, you know, the real sports. So to see Tiger Woods getting sympathy for a couple fans heckling him, and for Woods to attempt to quiet them with his gesture, simply exposes the absurdity of worshipping Woods or any other golfer’s ‘feats’ on the course as in any way comparable to those of someone who plays the other sports.
