iPhone share of U.S. smartphone traffic hits 69%

AdMob smartphone pie May 2009

See the blue slice in the pie chart at right? [ABOVE] It represents the iPhone’s share of U.S. smartphone traffic on the network maintained by AdMob, one of the companies that run those little ads that appear on the screen of your mobile phone.

We’ve been watching that slice grow over the past few months. In February it covered 51% of the pie. By April it had grown to 59%. And by Thursday morning, when AdMob released the May edition of its U.S. smartphone pie, Apple’s (AAPL) share had grown to 69% — a 10 point increase in one month.

I saw on CNET that somebody has figured out how to unlock the tethering feature for ATT finally even before they officially release it.

May make an iphone worth it now...

and?

how about this... what percent of all cellphones is it?

what percent of all phones?
what percent of all web traffic?
hell, what’s its percentage if you compare the web traffic of the iphone, firefox and explorer?
what percent of web traffic is on the iphone, apple os, or windows os?

stats are fun, when your intent is to steer a point to a stat driven conclusion, after snipping off any non-pertinent points

thanks for the rabid mac-fanbois triple ad

I prefer my HTC Touch Pro WinMo phone myself, thankyouverymuch!

Cut & Paste? I’ve had it for 9 months thank you! Aside from a very prolific community of iPhone app creators, my Winmo phone will kick your iPhone’s *%#. ;-P

Wow!

I can’t even consider getting one because I live in the sticks, and AT&T isn’t an option for service. I’d like for Bill Kurtis to come here with his laptop and “find the internet”.

I thought iPhone was not a smartphone.

Where did you get that impression? It could be that you are right. The iPhone is more a hand held computer that has a cellular phone included.

So if RIM is 1.9% of the market, and Apple is only 1%, does this mean that the apple phones are using a LOT of bandwith?

From a february article.

“Now, a report from ABI Research indicates that Apple did in fact meet its goal for cellphone market share, coming in with a 1.1% market share for all cellphones worldwide. The top spots in terms of market share were occupied by all the usual suspects. Nokia phones comprised 38.6% of the cellphone market, and Samsung phones took up the second spot with 16.2%. Meanwhile, Motorola continues to trend downwards, and in 2008 its phones comprised 8.3% of the entire cellphone market worldwide - a significant decline that can partly be attributed to the fact that much of Motorola’s lineup is comprised of low-end phones that are quickly taking a backseat to the popularity of smartphones. BlackBerry’s, in contrast, continued to proliferate in markets worldwide, and attained a 1.9% market share in the entire cellphone market.”

I don’t know about anybody else, but I do not want a tracking cookie on my phone. Evidently the iPhone is easy to track.
This bit of info is junk, since they seem to target iPhones.
I still use my Fuze and bluetooth PAN to my Acer Netbook with a 10 hour battery life.

So if RIM is 1.9% of the market, and Apple is only 1%, does this mean that the apple phones are using a LOT of bandwith?

Yes. Web surfing is a whole lot easier and more enjoyable on the iPhone, to the extent that a lot of iPhone users won't bother going to the next room to sit at the computer for quick browsing.

Unless I'm mistaken, AdMob sells the ads that appear as little mini-banners at the bottom of iPhone apps (for example). That has been a popular option for app developers, usually with an ad-supported free version and an ad-free paid version. No other mobile platform has anything remotely close to the iPhone app store, and a lot of those apps use the 'Net in one way or another -- for stock quotes, weather radar, online scoreboards for games, and so on.

Part of the idea of the iPhone is that it ties into the 'Net like a desktop computer does; that's why it's only offered with an unlimited data plan (at least in the US). That approach certainly leads to a much, much higher rate of 'Net usage per capita for the iPhone.

it doesn't use a "tracking cookie"; it notes the OS of the data requesting device when its URL is accessed. The iPhone is no easier or harder to track than any other mobile phone.

if you were to criticize it for being placed more often on websites optimized for iPhones, you might have an argument.

Hell yes it does. It's so easy to start up and use your browser or map, much easier than the Blackberrys and such that I've tried. I've spent two hours straight on the iPhone before.

Tethering unlock takes about 10 seconds. You can do it from the phone.
