A warning round was fired by the Poles when they sighted the plane and a second round was fired when it continued its flight. This brought it down.
Nice shooting, Poles. Also in this post:

War Danger Marks Neutrality Debate
The attitude we have maintained toward Japan, and which England is maintaining, he went on, is not neutrality, it is not statesmanship. It is rather a repulsive mixture of cowardice, cupidity and stupidity, unworthy of our present greatness as it is fraught with danger to our country and to the world in the future.
Strong stuff from a maverick Republican.
Payback on that one was a bitch, that’s for sure.
Do you suppose that if the Poles had kowtowed and cringed before Hitler they would have detered his aggression?
No one deserved the War less than the Poles nor suffered more. IMHO.
There, fixed it.
The suffering of the Poles were incomparably greater. Besides the South arguably initiated the War by firing on Fort Sumnter.
As you know, I am not unsympathetic to the Lost Cause (I think the Parcular Institution was moribund, regardless) but the no one would have initiated the Civil War had they been able to foresee the consequences.
Why bring up the "civil war", or the "war of northern aggression" as you and my southern buddy always puts it as if I, a "Yankee", started it?
It isn't the subject at hand.
That comment was aimed at Mr. Mass. Cheap shot, guilty of thread hijack.
At least there is the BTTT effect.
I’m just an innocent bystander.
You know what happens to innocent bystanders, dontcha?
I didn't know. Thanks for the explanation!
Oh, and this is another BTTT for Homer's article!
"The Stuttgart [Southern Germany] Special Court today sentenced Eduard Schmidt, a Catholic priest, to sixteen months imprisonment on his conviction of circulating "evil slanders" about Chancellor Adolf Hitler.
Remarkable how little space this article takes, and how matter-of-factly it's reported. No comments condemning the Nazi actions from Britain, from France, the US or even the Vatican!
Seems to me that while much of the Catholic clergy's hearts & souls were in the right place, its leadership was some place else...
should read "by the EMPTY heads & uniforms of her armed forces..."
Too bad the Poles didn’t shoot down even more.
"One essential fact dominates all our thought," he began. "For twenty years the situation in Europe has not been so delicate nor so grave as now. On the other side of our frontiers there are 8,000,000 men mobilized. In their factories the manufacture of armaments is being pushed forward feverishly. reports keep reaching us of maneuvers and troop concentrations.
"Within our own borders we are being subjected to a campaign of subtle propaganda tending to weaken our energy and to break that solidarity between France and Britain without which there is no great hope for liberty in Europe and the world.
"In these circumstances, the Premier continued, the government could do only one thing, and to that thing it must bend all its energies. It must keep strengthening its defenses..."
More tanks and planes, you fool, and put radios in them. Forget the Maginot Line, it won't help much.
wow, that last paragraph is really something:
“I want to see our country awoken from its timidity....
well, folks, we been here before i guess.
