L.A. teenager who flew single-engine plane across the country lands in Compton

A 15-year-old Los Angeles girl who navigated a single-engine Cessna through thunderstorms in Texas and took in breathtaking aerial views of Arizona's sunsets landed her plane to cheering crowds at Compton Woodley Airport on Saturday. She is believed to be the youngest African American female pilot to fly solo across the country.

Kimberly Anyadike took off from Compton 13 days ago with an adult safety pilot and Levi Thornhill, an 87-year-old who served with the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. They flew to Newport News, Va., making about a dozen stops along the way.

Anyadike learned to fly a plane and helicopter when she was 12 with the Compton-based Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum, which offers aviation lessons to at-risk youth and economically disadvantaged students through an after-school program. The organization owns the small plane Anyadike flew.

Anyadike said she loved the feeling of streaking across the sky. She told her mother that it was like a wild ride at Magic Mountain.

A cheerful story with a happy ending. Good for the young lady.

Yep, I find it very interesting that a person can get a pilots license at 12 years of age(at least that was used to be the cutoff age) but must be 16 to get a drivers license and, in some states, drive with an adult until they are 18. I will never lodge a protest however because the dems response would be to raise the age requirement for Pilots! They always get it backwards.

If I had a plane and I was in Compton I would get the hell out of Compton.

Uhhh, “solo” means “1”, as in “alone”!

She is believed to be the youngest African American female pilot to fly solo across the country.

Then the writer writes,

Kimberly Anyadike took off from Compton 13 days ago with an adult safety pilot and Levi Thornhill, an 87-year-old...

Amazing that the writer went to collage to become a journalist.

PS. you have to be 16 to get your pilots license.

Congratulations to the young lady! But how I detest divisive terms like “African American!” Maybe we should all run around distinguishing ourselves by our heritage, in which case I’d be an English-Irish-Scots-Welsh-German-Cherokee American instead of simply an American.

The multiculturalists have worked hard over the past 30 or so years to turn Americans against each other. They have nearly succeeded in reversing the meaning of e pluribus unum (from the many, one). And we all know the age-old military maxim: Divide and conquer.

“They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn’t have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn’t listen. They just did what they wanted to do.”

Only 15 and she is already in the I-hate-whitey mode.

Actually, the area right around that airport has some nice houses.

Federal Aviation Regulation 61.103 states that you must be 17 to obtain a private pilot certificate. You may solo at 16.

Does this mean she is 1/2 American because the other 1/2 is African?

Didn’t a young gal try this a few years ago and died in a plane crash doing it.

At the time i thought rules were being changed so it would not be done again.

Yes, really strange. I remember my first “solo” in a Cessna and then later with the Navy. I distinctly recall waving goodbye to my flight instructors!!!

“Didn’t a young gal try this a few years ago and died in a plane crash doing it.”

That is correct. I forget her age. 9 years or there about?

According the autopsies, at the time the plane got into trouble (bad weather?), the pilot flying with her was at the controls as evidenced by the way the bones were broken.

That was an awful thing they had this child do which ended in her death.

Doesn't sound to me like she's “in the I-hate-whitey” mode. Sounds to me like she has an accurate picture of the US Air Corps at the time.

“Does this mean she is 1/2 American because the other 1/2 is African”

I doubt that the aircraft, weather, terrain, or ATC system cared one whit about which half she was. Hopefully, she doesn’t either.

In the end, it’s about the pilot, not the complexion.
