Did you hear about the guy that lives on nothing? No seriously, he lives on zero dollars a day. Meet Daniel Suelo, who lives in a cave outside Moab, Utah. Suelo has no mortgage, no car payment, no debt of any kind. He also has no home, no car, no television, and absolutely no “creature comforts.” But he does have a lot of creatures, as in the mice and bugs that scurry about the cave floor he’s called home for the last three years.

To us, Suelo probably sounds a little extreme. Actually, he probably sounds very extreme. After all, I suspect most of you reading this are doing so under the protection of some sort of man-made shelter, and with some amount of money on your person, and probably a few needs for money, too. And who doesn’t need money unless they have completely unplugged from the grid? Still, it’s an amusing story about a guy who rejects all forms of consumerism as we know it.

When I started making cakes, they were all ‘layer’ cakes, LOL , always guaranteed to be a disaster, for the tops were never level.

So I went to catering class and learned to cut the hump off.

After I quit decorating the cakes, I used the removable bottom angel food cake pan and the 13” flat pan and never made another layer cake.

LOL, also learned to make pink elephants of cake icing and my bottle of champagne cake was popular for men, use 2 sheet cake pans, so it is high, [layers again] partially bury the bottle at an angle and make the pink elephants, makes a good mens birthday cake.

Meat loaf decorated like a cake, with mashed potatoes, was not popular with the men in my world, they did not accept that it was not cake icing on the meat loaf, as it looked like it might be.

Microsoft Releases Advance Notification for Out-of-Band Security Bulletins

Microsoft has issued a Security Bulletin Advance Notification
indicating that it will be releasing two out-of-band security
bulletins. These bulletins, which have the severity rating of
critical, will address issues with Microsoft Visual Studio and
Internet Explorer. The notification states that release of these
bulletins is scheduled for July 28, 2009.

US-CERT will provide additional information as it becomes available.

They do take 24 hours to get good and dry...

I keep finding more uses for the veggie powder...

Today, along with everything else, I have 3 loaves of veggie powder enhanced bread rising (used about a cup - that should be pretty hefty on the veggies). Sure smells good - can hardly wait.

Granny, granny, NEVER wrap your baked taters in aluminum foil. Makes the skin soft and soggy. Didn’t you know that the crisp skin is the very best part of baked taters? LOL

The crispy skin is my favorite part of a baked tater too. The most nutritious as well, I hear. Found a good way to get 'em crispy - spread on some oil and salt and take at 425 or 450 or so. yum!

BTW, my experiment with growing taters in the mountains is going well. The plants in the meadow didn't make it, but those on the fringes of it are alive and kicking. I'm having a friend tater-sit them while I'm back in the hot valley, waiting to see if my son makes it into the Air Force or not. It will be one stressful week, waiting! Patience is not my best virtue. (Or even one of them!)

Pretty interesting stuff. I thought maybe the guy was just a hobo, but it sounds like he is (mostly) living off the land, rather than begging for handouts.

Garage sale tally is now at $200.00!! My friend told me to go through my house again on Wed. because she ‘has an empty table’ to re-fill and sales seem to be higher when there’s more to choose from.

People are in a buying mood. Must be a psychological thing because everyone’s broke, but still buying, thinking they’re getting a bargain. Go figure.

Well, actually, I’ll be a buyer soon, to0...but for survival gear, LOL!

I’m so glad I LIKE rice and red beans. :)

Well, here goes nothin. I picked a 5 gal. pail of green beans this morning. Saved out some for a friend and have my 1st batch ever in my new canner. Also, sliced some zukes and have them on my dehydrator. My son didn’t have to work today so he was here to help. (I think he actually likes to do this kind of stuff or at least is interested in seeing how it works). He’s in there watching the pressure go up on the canner. I’ll report back tomorrow and let you know if I was successful or not.

You’re doing great! A 5 gallon bucket of beans is a LOT of beans, LOL! I’m avoiding picking mine; I will hoe all day but I HATE picking beans. Go figure! :)

That has GOT to be a ‘guy thing.’ Our Macho Men must secretly be afraid of the dark. My husband never turns off ANYTHING; drives me insane. I thought making HIM pay the entire electric bill (I pay the gas) would solve that problem but nope. He just pays it and goes skipping through the house turning things on.

I’ll never get it. *SHAKES HEAD*

LOL! Same here. I keep telling him that when the cap and trade bill goes through, he BETTER start turning lights off! I don't have much hope though. He may think of it as job security (he works at a power plant).

And speaking of Beans and Rice, here is a wonderful Spanish Rice recipe that I use every week or so to use up leftovers, and nine times out of ten I have the basic ingredients on hands. Basic food; nourishing and filling.

Spanish Rice

1 1/2 cups regular white rice
1 tsp. salt (can omit)
1 small can tomato sauce (or leftover spaghetti sauce, or your own pureed canned tomatoes; a scant cup, 5 oz.)
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, or equal chopped
1 T. olive oil
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. dried parsley (or 2 tsp. fresh in season)
1/2 tsp back pepper, or more to taste
3 cups water

Leftover veggies or chopped leftover chicken or beef or pork or venison if you have it on hand.

1 can of drained and rinsed beans, your choice. I use black beans or red kidney beans.

In a covered non-stick saute pan, or a covered, heavy bottom soup kettle, saute onion in olive oil until soft. Add rice and saute until starting to brown a little. Add the rest of the ingredients and any leftover veggies or chopped meat you have on hand. Stir until well mixed, cover and cook for 20 minutes on medium heat. Stir every five minutes or so.

Add a can of beans and heat through. Serve with shredded cheese and salsa if desired.

Makes a great side dish, stand alone supper or filling for tacos and burritos.

My husband is a computer geek. He sees NO cognative dissonance between his survival stashing and his addiction to electronic gadgetry...which relies on electricity!

Knight Fire

Incident Overview

Mount Elizabeth and Pilot Peak Fire Lookouts reported the Knight Fire on 7/26/09 (yesterday) at 3:36 p.m. The fire is currently estimated at 275 acres in size. The fire is burning in the Middle Fork Stanislaus River Canyon and potentially threatens the small, remotely located summer cabin subdivision of Mount Knight. In some places, the fire’s perimeter is within 1/4 mile of the subdivision. Although no official evacuation order is in place at this time for the subdivision, the Forest is working closely with Tuolumne County Emergency officials and and the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department, and has developed a contingency plan with decision points in the event that an evacuation becomes necessary. Most Mount Knight residents have already elected to voluntarily leave the subdivision at this point in time, due the proximity of fire activity. Yesterday’s normal upcanyon afternoon winds fanned the fire, and the fire is now well established in the rugged canyon terrain, burning in heavy fuels including brush and timber. Initial attack on the fire included the following Forest Service and other agency firefighting resources: six engines; four Type 2 medium air tankers; two Type 1 heavy air tankers, two water dropping capable helicopters, two Type 1 hand crews, one dozer, one water tender, law enforcement and prevention units, and supervisory overhead. The day’s initial attack, and combined extended attack personnel, totalled approximately 125 firefighters. At the time of this update the fire continues to burn very actively, even at night, with spots occurring up to 1/4 quarter mile outside the fire’s perimeter. Crews are beginning to burn out constructed dozer line along the ridge in an effort to protect the Mount Knight subdivision. Conditions continue to be very dry with today’s expected temperature to be 95-100 degrees, and humidity to be about 11-15%, with 2-8 mph upcanyon winds gusting to 12 mph over peaks and ridges. The Forest ordered a type 2 Incident Management Team late yesterday afternoon, with expected arrival at 1000 hours today (7/27). Additionally, the following firefighting resources have been ordered with expected arrival today: fifteen Type 1 (twenty person) hand crews; six dozers; ten engines; two water tenders; six air tankers; 5 helicopters; and additional overhead and support personnel. Once filled, these orders will bring the total personnel figure to about 550+ firefighters dedicated to the incident.
