I mean, I love going to the DMV...everyone is so pleasant and helpful — How would going to the DMV possibly piss anyone off.

“The guy did have a cane.”

There are 81 year old oriental martial artists with canes that can send multiple assailants through the air like a juggler.

Having said that, its late and I am not going to watch the clip because the odds are I won’t like what I see. {;^)

I know many won’t agree, but I have known people in their 80’s who are mean as snakes!!

I side with the officials in this one

Maybe it was justified, but taser use by cops is getting out of control overall. I would say most of the time it is not needed.

Difficult to have an opinion without seeing it happen.

I’m not sure an 81 year old has any business inside of a DMV in the first place, if it has anything to do with them driving a vehicle.

I hear that the latest taser can fire three shots.

I swear if I had to face a person with a taser ahead of time I would carry an umbrella, would make a decent taser shield.

Another case of a cop losing control over a situation and using extreme force on an eldery person.

I remember not too long ago an officer tased an eldery woman for not moving her car after he ordered her to move as she was waiting in her running car for her crippled husband to get into the car. She did not feel it was safe to abandon her husband and the cop had no mercy on her situation. That was mean spirited and the eldery woman got angry about being treated disrespectfully and did not back down to his “authority.” So he tased her to get even.

Cops have no right to be in someone’s face egging them on like that when they know the citizen is angry. There are skills to defuse a situation like this. If the cop wanted to arrest the old man, he should have just arrested him rather than getting in his face when he knew the old guy was melting down. The cop was probably angry and wanted an excuse to hurt the old fart.

Why are they getting into so many pissing matches with citizens to this point of extreme violent reaction? There is something going wrong in their training since this war-like homeland security stuff started. American cops did not used to interact this way with the public when we had a constitution.

The press has this all wrong. The old guy was going to the DMV for Obama care, and they revived him when he started to have a heart attack.

81 year-old guy probably got pissed off in the DMV when they refused to renew his driver’s license. All he had was his Hawaii C.O.L.B. and that wasn’t good enough ID for their 6 points of ID. /sarc

We'll remind you of that if you're lucky enough to reach the age of 81.

"he should have just arrested him"

and what about the cane in the guy's hand? did you forget about it or simply dismiss it?

i have a 94 year-old great uncle. give him a cane and a reason to get mad and you'll feel it.

so besides hand-to-cane combat, what would you suggest the officer do to subdue this man?

welcome to FR, BTW.

Yes, I agree the old guy was incited to rage by the officer’s disrespect and he did have a cane and the officer used that as the reason to tase the old man. He took the chance of killing the old guy in the name of him being “armed’ with a cane. Life of the enemy is cheap when one is at war.

It would have been easy to “disarm” him of his cane. What in the world did the officers do before tasers when faced with an angry oldster with a cane??? They disarmed him. You call it “hand to hand combat”...that is ratcheting up the language to that of a soldier don’t you think? And no doubt if that officer had not had his taser he probably would have hand to hand combated the guy to death in the name of that cane.

That is the problem, you know. The cops are being trained to look at citizens as enemies and themselves as soldiers in a homeland war against terror. They are overreacting because we are not at war and citizens are not the enemy. They are being trained to act in this way. Some go for it! Others have a large dose of humanity and respect for citzens.

So, no I did not overlook the detail that the eldery guy had a cane. I just don’t buy the excuse that it justifed the officer’s extreme force. I think things are out of hand and we have to push back now to get police training and goals back in line with a constitution rather than a police state at war with citizens.

Would you be fine with your 94 year old great uncle being severely harmed because he was angry while “armed” with a cane? Nursing home employees don’t tase the eldery nor enter into hand to hand combat with their residents and they deal with this all the time.

coupla things:

i did not say hand-to-hand combat. i said 'hand-to-cane' combat.

even though i cannot see the video, please describe how this man was 'severely harmed' as you put it. from my experiences, everyone who has been tased in my presence has been upright, talking, and lucid within 10 minutes.

before tasers, this guy most likely would have been mased or hit with a nightstick. the effects of both of those levels of force leave longer lasting and more painful effects than tasing.

could these guys have simply 'disarmed' this guy as you said? i don't know. i wasn't there. but neither was anyone else on this thread.

when given the choice to support a police officer or an an angry man with a cane, i'll support the cop off the bat until i see evidnece to the contrary.
