Man falls from West Oakland building trying to rappel to his apartment window

OAKLAND — A man apparently locked out of his West Oakland apartment was seriously hurt when he tried to rappel down the roof of the building into a back window and fell four stories, fire officials said.

Fire fighters responded to calls of the man's fall around 1:40 a.m. today in the 700 block of Peralta Street, across from the Main Oakland Post Office.

The man, whose age was not immediately known, apparently lived in the building and had been locked out of his apartment, officials said.

He went to the roof and rigged an orange electrical extension cord, which he threw over the south side of the building and tried to use as a rope to lower himself to a back window, investigators said.

The cord snapped and the man fell more than 40 feet to the parking lot below, suffering several injuries including fractured ankles, they added.

The man is expected to recover.

Stupidity should hurt. And it looks like it did in this case.

I imagine he didn't want to call a cop -- it would have turned into some big racial thing.

He must have seen the episode of, “Burn Notice” where Weston did this. He fell, too.

He went to the roof and rigged an orange electrical extension cord....

No doubt there will soon be a lawsuit against the manufacturer for their cords having inadequate tensile strength....

I am pretty sure that's not approved under the NEC.

"The man is expected to recover."

LOL! What's worse than falling four stories? Surviving a fall from four stories. Wakng up to find his ankles shoved up his nostrils, I'll bet he wishes otherwise.

No mention of a warning sticker to not use it as a rope for climbing. Here come the lawyers.

(there are precedents - lawsuits bringing warnings about not stopping chainsaws with your hands or face or genitals, warnings not to insert limbs into wood chippers, warnings that roaring flames will be hot, etc)

Locked out and breaking in through the back door... Was his last name Gates? Maybe he can sue the police for not investigating this suspicious behavior. /s

As Lt. Douglas MacArthur’s Irish sergeant said to him one day in the Philippine campaign against the Moros after an enemy slug penetrated “Dugout Dug’s” campaign hat said: “Beggin’ the Lieutenant’s pardon, but the rest of the Lieutenant’s life is pure velvet.” This dude in Oakland should limp into the nearest convenience store and buy a Lotto ticket.

Or at least for failing to carry a prominent warning that they shouldn't be used for lowering oneself from the roof of a tall building. 'Cause, like, how was he supposed to know that this wouldn't be safe, when there was no warning?

Perhaps a lawsuit is in order. The extension cord clearly lacked a warning against using the cord in such a manner. /s

No, no lawsuit for that. It will be because they didn’t have a warning message on them saying NOT to use them for climbing or rappelling.

National Locksmith Insurance would prevent these kinds of accidents, when combined with Universal Cellphone Implantation.
I hope he learned to always use the YELLOW extension cord in the future; the orange ones are only medium weight; the green ones are light weight; the yellow are OSHA certified. ;-)

Great, now every episode of Burn Notice will have “Dramatization, Do Not Attempt” scrawled across the bottom of the screen.
