One of the favorite places for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and wife Ginni to grab some sleep is in a Wal-Mart parking lot, Mrs. Thomas told National Public Radio on Wednesday.

In fact, the Washington power couple spends each summer touring the United States in a mobile home, she said. The justice and his wife have cruised through 27 states since buying their used recreation vehicle in 1999.

The hitch is better. In case you want to stay in area for a few days, you just unhitch and you are more mobile, less limits on where you can park with your truck.

I would love to have a motor home and tour the country in it but Mr. Ditter is not interested.

I think it would be great to pile in the motor home in early January, when it gets cold, and head south for a month or so. Here in Texas, we have a large population of winter Texans that head to the deep valley during the winter. Warm and dry unlike warm and damp FL.

My parents retired to Rockport Texas and they had lots of “snowbirds” for friends. They looked forward to their arrival every winter.

I was in Rockport/Port Aransas two weeks ago. I normally spend a month in a rental condo down there each winter. I would buy a place in Rockport if I could find exactly what I want. I’m close...

My parents both died in ‘84 and I haven't been back to Rockport since. My grandmother grew up there in the late 1800’s and I spent a lot of time there visiting my parents in the 1970’s and 80’s. It was a lovely little town last time I saw it, I am sure it has changed a lot since then.

Years ago I read “Travels with Charlie” by John Steinbeck. He had traveled through the U.S. in the 30’s and decided to do the trip again with Charlie his dog.

It was a long time ago when I read it but really enjoyed it at the time.

Travels with Charlie, may be my all-time favorite Steinbeck book.

I haven’t read Travels with Charlie in years. IIRC Steinbeck began his trip in Sag Harbor or somewhere on Long Island.

Maybe I will pick up a copy and re-read it.

It is always interesting to read a book one read years ago. My reaction is usually one of surprise. I wonder how I could have read some of it and not remember it or perceive it differently.

I’m psyched now to re-read Travels with Charlie. I loved it at the time. Probably will again.

I had a similar experience.

But mine was at a Sheetz Convenience Store Gas Station (I think it was on Rte 22). We were returning from a baseball game, and I stopped for fuel; my two youngest boys were with me...and I sent the older one into the store to but drinks (Gatorade) while I got gas. There was a hugh (and series) motor home on the other side of my fuel island; and the driver was a very tall man with glasses (who instantly made me think of Clarence Thomas—could have been his twin). I remember him kind of not wanting to be noticed for laughing when my boys quarrelled out the car window as to what flavor Gatorade the older would purchase for the younger (Mom, make him buy me a blue one!!!)

If I would have known it was Justice Thomas, maybe I could have asked for a word of wisdom on conflict resolution.

Having RV’s in the parking lot is another layer of security at night, too.

Typical journalist. Doesn’t know the difference between a motorhome and a mobile home!
