Has anyone out there read these two works, and had the same response to them as I did?

Read Screwtape, but not Rules. Suggested continuing reading: Darkness At Noon - Authur Koestler -— the story of what happens AFTER the revolution to its supporters. Also see history of the Stalinist Purges - avoid wikipedia as reference.

i am reading the Playboy interview with Alinsky...very illuminating as to the realities that he and his generation faced. His view was way ahead of the times and yet frighteningly chilling.

He defintely grew up as a thug on the streets, was very close to the Mob for two years and then into ruthless union organizing. It is a very eye opening view of the ruthlessness of capitalism back then and the depth of the depression that explains the progressive movement’s origins.

Its not the same at all today...all except for the thugs.

I think I had better round up a copy of "Rules" for myself. Mein Kampf was a #1 best seller (non-fiction) in May 1939 as people watched developments in Europe and wanted to know, "who is that guy?" (See partial list below from 5/1/39 NYT.) It would be nice to see a growing curiosity about Alinsky's book in the same way.

This is very interesting. Now I’m going to have to get a copy : )

Also, Wikipedia (yes, I know : ) lets the cat out of the bag with the entry on Saul Alinsky references to his great influences on Hil and BO.

One more thing, it’s not a good thing that some of the posters would even joke about stealing books from the library...reminiscent of book burnings and all. Seriously, several have Mein Kampf on their book shelves and that’s a good thing-know thine enemy.

I've read Screwtape, and I just ordered Rules for Radicals from Amazon, based on your comparison.

I noticed something really interesting here: Amazon popped up a page that said, "Customers who bought Rules for Radicals also bought," and the first two books listed were Levin's Liberty and Tyranny and Beck's Common Sense.

Maybe conservatives are going to wise up, after all!
