I got finished reading Casino Royale this weekend and I came across two guns I have never heard before.

The 30-30(always typed with the hyphen)was invented in the late 1890s. The most popular 30-30 was the Winchester Model 94, lever action. However, there were several bolt action rifles made for the 30-30. Remington also made a pump and semi auto for a round that was identical to the 30-30 but it used a rimless case instead of the rimmed case a 30-30 uses. The round was officially called the .30 Remington but many called it the 30-30 Remington. Savage was one of the many manufactures who made 30-30 bolt action rifles. All of these firearms were available in 1960. I personally prefer the Marlin 336(and variants)to the Winchester 94.:)

Actually 7.62 is a 30 caliber, not 32. 7.65 is a .32 and the .32 ACP round was called the 7.65 in Europe(actually 7.65 rounds out to about .31 but you know how it is). 9MM is a .355.

My bookshelf at home is resembling what used to be the one in the Ian Fleming section at Barnes and Noble.

I love these threads on guns and ammo. I learn something every time. Freepers know their stuff.

“I think the difference may be that .308 is the bullet diameter, but .300 (the caliber in European NATO parlance) is the land-to-land diameter of the barrel.”

Exactly right. If the bore diameter is .300 and the rifling is .004” deep, then the overall bore diameter from groove-to-groove is .308”. As a reloader, I know that .308 has been popular over the years for a number of commercial and military calibers.
