Latest Microsoft Updates crashed Vista Home Premium on HP laptop (Vanity)

OK, so my son calls me from Auburn ...

Right after downloading and installing the latest updates from our friends in Redmond, the OS crashes into a memory dump/ BSOD.

Vista Home Premium 64 bit on an HP notebook duo core 2 quad etc etc.

It'll boot and run in safe mode, but something Microsoft sent out conflicts BIG time.

I called Geek Squad to set up an appt for him, and the gentleman at Geek Squad said they had been getting a LOT of calls about laptops crashing after a Windows update.

Shoulda bought him that Macbook ;-)

The “SO???” is be sure to make use of “restore points” if you are a MS victim ... so you can go backwards in time if “undocumented features” of an update ruin your computing day.

Yessir. I updated 8 systems and 6 are unusable now. Thank God I stopped at only 8.

We were planning a move to Ubuntu anyway, I guess I’ll get it installed on those 6 first.

It happened to me once on an old NT (4?) installation. I downloaded the latest patches and it resized the kernel, which ended up overwriting the boot sector, resulting in a somewhat expensive door stop.

I had to do a Level 0 format and reinstall from scratch.

Hope that didn’t happen here...

*Very* common with the latest MSFT updates. I generally advise waiting for about a month after they come out except for security patches.

rolling back my video driver worked for a while, but this last time, my laptop wouldn't respond at all. I had to rebuild the OS from the rescue discs.

Had I the cash on hand, I would have purchased a MAC and needed software, but hindsight is 20/20

I tried system restore and it begins and then says error.GRRRRRR

Could you tell me a little more about the specific error code? Might help me to look it up. I'm finding a lot on Vista update crashes for laptops on google.

As far fixing the problem, doing system restore in safe mode should roll it back before the patch was applied.

I can’t see the error code, cuz my son is at school. He says it displays briefly for about 5 seconds then the screen goes blank. Lots of usual stuff about BIOS and hex code addresses.
