The copies of OS X used in Hackintoshes are nearly always pirated, as in downloaded. Rare is the Hackintosh user who actually goes out and buys OS X, especially since the process of installing OS X on a Hackintosh involves adding component-specific drivers to an ISO image.

I got about 10GB back after upgrade. I believe Apple promised 6 or 7 so that was a nice surprise.

Much of the reclaimed space comes from a new counting system. Prior versions of OS X used base 2 counting (1,024 MB = 1GB) whereas Snow Leopard uses the newer base 10 system (1,000 MB = 1GB.) The net result is a higher amount of apparent free space, when in reality it's just being counted differently, and the same percentage of drive space is still occupied.

Snow Leopard DOES have a smaller drive footprint than Leopard, on the order of 4-5GB, so don't get me wrong. But the rest is just a counting change.

I did some research into the Hackintosh thing a few months ago. Seems with the right hardware combo you can install retail Leopard without issue to the point software update works without trashing anything—no warez required.

I’d still rather have a new iMac or MBP myself. Macs just seem to be put together in a superior manner to me and I have built my share of pc’s over the years.

Took about an hour... then, the first boot seemed to take forever, thought something was SNAFUed - but all is well.

"After they checked out OSX for a while I'm sure most users would end up using Windows 7 most of the time"

I use both.

There's no comparison. I wince when I have to switch to Win7.

But, can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to Snow Leopard?

Because it's there, and because you can. :)

I have noticed my shutdown and restart times are extended.
It’s not seeing my 1TB FW800 drive that’s daisy chained either...will have to work on that!

On start up, I’m getting my desktop and the dock just fine, however, my mouse over icons in the dock doesn’t respond for about 30-45 seconds...using a wireless logitech mouse by USB...>?>>

Based on the opposite of what you base your opinions on

I figured it was the opposite of usability. Thank you for clarifying.

Okay. I did the research this morning. To buy a Mac similarly equipped hardware-wise as what I now use, I’d have to spend FIVE TIMES what I paid.

Advantage? I can run a different OS that isn’t Windows 3.1, 95, 98, 98/se, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, W7, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Mepis, Mandriva, Puppy, Linpus, DSL, or the rest of the OS’s whose names I forget.

Five times the money for one more OS?

More secure? The ONLY infection that ever happened in my house was when I was trying to download a “free” game. I called the virus in. I dont’ get virii around here.

Smoother operation? Better performance? WHAT is five times better? If I could honestly say a mac performs FIVE times better that a similarly equipped PC, then it would be worth the money. Plus, the absolute must have MS software will run on Mac, just like Windows, or under Windows, but at a performance hit. I’d have to overcome running two OS’s hardware-wise, so I’d more than likely need MORE speed, memory, and stuff just to break even perfomance wise. Then it would cost even more that five times as much.

When I can afford a Mac, I won’t need it. Maybe I can just put a Apple sticker on the side of my HP and impress the ladies.

I’d love to have the OS as a dual boot. Wish they’d ALLOW us OSX wanna-have-its to buy and install it legally. I’d buy it. The OS is the only advantage of a Mac from my perspective.

Build a Cheap Hackintosh -
MOBO/CPU/VIDEO for $124 shipped! Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L and Pentium E5200 Dual-Core RETAIL combo ($106 FS), PNY 8500GT Video Card ($17.99 AR/Bing)

It seems a good Asus or Gigabyte mother board and an Nvidia graphics card is a good start to a hackintosh

Swordmaker, I just want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your hard work on the Mac ping list! You’re always ready to help and never laugh at my stupidity. Thanks for this. I think I’ll wait about a week (but oh I wanna get it today!!!) just to see how it works out for everyone.

I have question for anyone who might know the answer to
this:

When/if I install snow leopard, will I need to repartition my hard drive to run Windows? I know it sucks, but one application I use for work doesn't work on Mac. It was a cost-saving thing.

I bought my iMac in March and I LOVE IT. But, can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to Snow Leopard?

I have a new Mac Mini and I can't see any reason to upgrade.

Wired has some of the pros and cons here

Congrats on your new Mac. So you got a Macbook Pro for $900? That’s a great price for sure. Enjoy :)
