We're not lovin' it … McDonald's is UK's most-hated brand

FAST food giant McDonald's has been named as Britain's most-hated brand in a new survey by marketing experts. The American burger chain – unpopular with 46 per cent of consumers – topped a list of the least-liked brands which featured some of the country's biggest names.

Tesco was second most hated in the poll for Marketing magazine, followed by Coca-Cola and the discount fashion chain Primark.

However, the research showed some of the most well-known brands also attracted consumers in equal measure.

Tesco and Coca-Cola were also voted Britain's sixth and seventh most loved brands respectively.

Both were more loved than hated, with 66 per cent backing for Tesco and 51 per cent for Coca-Cola. McDonald's attracted 36 per cent support.

Brand experts said dislike of McDonald's derived from health concerns and its market dominance.

Charlie Robertson, of Glasgow's Red Spider brand consultancy, said: "People are worried about growing obesity and fast food, while they also dislike McDonald's for its bland Americanising of the high street."

However, he said polarised opinion over major brands – the so-called "Marmite effect" – was simply because they were so high profile. He said: "If you are big, you are going to attract more negative opinion."

Marketing said the most hated brands were typically seen as being of poor quality and value for money, unreliable, and having irritating advertising.

Primark and Nestle were singled out for their perceived poor ethical record, over sourcing and marketing in poor countries. Sky and BT were seen as providing services that consumers were more likely to have a strong opinion about when things went wrong.

The brands topping the most-loved list made popular "comfort" products – such as Cadbury for its chocolate and Heinz for soup and baked beans.

Yes, I'm curious — is McDonalds making profits over there?

One of my favorite days at McHell was kicking with Ronald in the basement smoking butts after some promo we had.

The only other country who can compete with them as the world's worst cooks is possibly Germany.

I've traveled to both on business several times. Germany edges out Britain for food, they tie for beer.

Has anyone noticed the McD’s commercials here in the states?

The people in them... seem to be everything but WASP.

They had one tonight on the Emmys, and every language but English was showcased.

“Tesco is great.”

Bratislava (Slovakia) had 3 big Tescos, sort of a combination of Walmart and an old style department store.
I used them for paper goods, groceries, housewares, and computer supplies.
I did not think much of their clothing.

My three favorite fast food places are IN-N-OUT, Der Weinerschnitzel and McDonald’s.

The best two flavors of Coca Cola are the original flavor of Classic Coke and then Cherry Coke!

If McDonald’s menu items were all halal, it wouldn’t even be in the top ten of this list.

There's only one American burger chain endorsed by this healthcare fanatic. Five Guys Burgers and Fries regular cheeseburger (which is actually a double cheeseburger) is about 840 calories and 1050mg Sodium. Throw in half a regular order of Ocean fries and you got yourself a 1400 calorie snack there Barry. Way to set the example jerk. Oh I forgot, you and the missus have that free healthcare for life thing now. Thank me.

One of these is a clown. The other is the mascot of a multinational fast-food company.

I take the grand kids to McDonalds often. The kids love it and I enjoy telling them that a group of crazies called PETA wants to take their McDonalds food away.

Thanks for the reminder to donate to Ronald McDonald House while I’m there.

I love McDonald’s $1 double hamburger, and they’ve got great oatmeal cookies, and the best iced tea around. Also, I love their side salads, which cost $1. You get the salad, it has two cherry tomatoes and mixed greens, and carrot strips in it, is always fresh, and you get Paul Newman salad dressing with it (diet or regular, I love the creamy french and the low cal Italian), croutons if you ask for them, and plastic fork and knife, all for one buck. I’ve stopped buying the bags of salad at the grocery stores. Why buy those when you can get fresher, healthier, and cheaper salad at McDonald’s. I go and buy 2 or three of them to bring home (the bagged salads at the store cost $2.50 to $3), so the cost is the same, and the quality from McDonald’s is much better. I like their breakfast food too. To me, McDonald’s is the perfect example of capitalism at its best. May they exist as long as I am alive.

“McDonalds has Ronald McDonald Houses all over the place...”

Yes, that is a very good charity. We very rarely eat at McDonalds (I am not a fast food person) but we have been stopping in for some of those new coffees. Yummy, but oddly I want sugar in mine, and I never take sugar in my coffee. (See, there is the devious McDonald’s plan to make me fat!) And we had those Angus burgers this summer, also very good.

I must remember to put some money in the Ronald McDonald House jar next time.

I used to do it all the time when the kid was young and we ate there regularly.
