Record Breaking Granny: 1,400 Relatives
ABCNews ^ | 9-22-09 | ABC's Simon McGregor-Wood reports from Jerusalem:

Posted on 09/22/2009 10:25:52 AM PDT by rawhide

Rachel Krishevsky was 19 when she married her cousin Yitzik from within the ultra orthodox Haredi community in Jerusalem. The young couple then set about following the Jewish commandment to be “fruitful and multiply.” And they certainly succeeded.

By the time she passed away last Saturday in Jerusalem aged 99, Rachel had according to her family, no less than 1,400 children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren. She and her husband had seven boys and four daughters. Among the ultra orthodox jewish community large families are seen as a blessing. Each of their 11 children followed in Rachel’s footsteps, resulting in 150 grandchildren. In turn these descendants had 1,000 children of their own and in the last few years several hundred great-great-grandchildren started to appear.

According to one unnamed grandchild Wednesday, “grandma knew all of her descendants by name.”

Despite such a fruitful life members of Rachel’s huge family said they felt great sadness at her passing.

“Grandma was a God-fearing woman her whole life, and her door was always open to the homeless and poor near the market. We are sad about her death, but proud of what she achieved in her life,” said another grandchild.

Mrs Krishevsky lived near the Mahane Yehuda market in West Jerusalem and was a well known local figure.

Excuse me while I throw up.

Nice story, but this sentence strikes me as somewhat ironic: According to one unnamed grandchild Wednesday, “grandma knew all of her descendants by name.”

Good!.....we need people to have babies....

for those of us in our 50's or upwards, maybe we can't have the children but we certainly can be very supportive of those that do, and I mean by money, kind words, and kinship....

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the Mods, I've always believed we should popularize among the youth the following slogan:

"F*** FOR THE FUTURE!"

Yes, and most Jewish people that I know, love a good party. Just think of all the food, music and dancing.

I can only pray that I have grandchildren who will someday say the same about me.

Actually I read about an Iceland study which said that relationships between more closely related couples (third cousin or so) tended to be more fruitful than relationships between complete strangers. I do agree though that first cousin is genetically risky but it appears to work out in their case.

Want to hear something vaguely throw up worthy consider Lazarus Long who was married to his twin female clones, and his rejuvenated mother. I like Heinlein and all but that was just a bit out there for me.

Stop that, it's obviously Green Anti-family talking points.

Yes, when you have that many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, the odds that great-great-grandchildren will spontaneously appear through quantum superposition becomes non-trivial. Or something like that.

Everyone is related, apparently.

11 children? Geez, half that number and I would blow my brains out.

“”””Good!.....we need people to have babies....”””””

I was going to make a joking comment along the lines of
“yeah... another ungratefull freeloader helping me nosedive into my grave, thats exactly what I want”,

but seriously, I wish that some people would not have more babies. Although I am not God and He is the only one with the authority to make that judgement... I still wish certain people would not reproduce.
