For someone who might have missed some classics or have just decided to stop being a DUmmie... what free ebooks would you recommend?
From any source, could be from Mises "library" or from Gutenberg.
Links if you got them!
http://www.scribd.com do a search of differnt topics and see what comes up.
Take your pic from almost 30,000 volumes. Some in HTML (with pics) and some in .txt format.
All free downloads.
If you like classic literature, history or unusual books this is the place.

Good Example:
Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds -by Mackay

The Mississippi scheme — The south-sea bubble — The tulipomania — The alchymists — Modern prophecies — Fortune-telling — The magnetisers — Influence of politics and religion on the hair and beard — The crusades — The witch mania — The slow poisoners — Haunted houses — Popular follies of great cities — Popular admiration of great thieves — Duels and ordeals — Relics.
The Bible.

Read the speeches of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. They’re online.
Unless you’re a regular user of the library, here’s a little-known secret: Your local library probably has scads of “free” ebooks. Anyone in Texas can get a library card at the Houston Public Library and probably other large city libraries. The amount of info online, including ebooks and research material (old newspapers), is phenomenal.
I await other responses to your inquiry.
Whatever you do, stay away from Ayn Rand. It will rot your brain. There used to be a site called Gutenberg Press that had a lot of free books. Not sure if still there. I think that is where I discovered The Song Of Hiawatha wasn’t just the “by the shores of gitcheegoome” poem. If you can find it, The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer(?) is to die for.
parsy, who is way behind on his reading
I don’t read a lot but noticed just about all the classics are available from multiple sources for free reading. I also just noticed the other day that the Sherlock Holmes stories are also online.
lol!
I definitely have Anthem!
LOL - Ayn Rand writes about not becoming what Hoffer calls a True Believer!
! did not know about bartleby and scribd
Reagan is THE man!
I did not know that Auntie Mame. I just bought a new 4GB flashcard too!
D*mb *ss parsifal! Texas fossil already had it linked. Next time, read some of the replies BEFORE you make an idiot out of yourself!
parsy, the red-faced
Order a cheap copy of Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater from Amazon. I started with it in 1962 and the rest is history.

Earth Abides by George Stewart is a great one.
I read that a long time ago, from the local library... that was probably half my life ago
thanks
It says only registered users can see the links

Sorry, I have the hard copy. I recommend the book in any form.
My wife uses the Sony PRS-505

I use a smaller AZTAK Pocket Pro

Hope you find what you want.
My favorites:
Political Sermons of the American Founding Era
American Political Writing During the Founding Era: 1760-1805, 2 vols
A break from the Madison, Jefferson, Hamilton, Franklin and Federalist Papers quotes which are all over the internet.
I didn’t want to mention Hoffer’s occupation, but it was a heck of a good book. Trying to work my way thru Fragebogen. I think nobody in the universe has heard of it. Male Fantasies I and II by Thelweiter(?) are fascinating, and no they aren’t naughty sex books.
But Ayn Rand can stunt someone’s mental growth if they read her at too young an age. The simplistic theology has an appeal which is hard to see thru unless one has the perspective of age. I read it at too young an age but an older woman insisted I read it when I was 15.

E-books Ping.

Well, I guess I'm simple, then. It's okay, I've been called worse ; )
Indeed you should go to your local public library and ask about Net-Library. It is much more than just public domain books.
Here in Georgia, it is available through GALILEO.
I love my new Kindle and while it wasn’t free ($4.47) - the first book I ordered from Amazon was so good I sat in the airport lounge reading it and missing my plane. (The last plane scheduled for Denver that day)
I sent in a suggestion that the developers add a small clock - so you could watch the time while you read. Haha!
The name of the book: Hostile Intent by Michael Walsh.
On subject...credit to restornu...LETS FEAST! - An Index to Online Great Books in English Translation {(simply maaavelous, dahling! /Billy Crystal)}

No, I was being serious. I think Ayn Rand is what Kruschev meant when he said the Russians would bury us. They sent us that dang woman and oh....
I’m going to that link you put in.
parsy, who is trying not to think about you know who cause it makes his blood pressure go up

They have books in text and some have audio also. The only thing is some books can only be had if you are in Australia or some other country, but I have read many classics, including many of the old Science fiction stories of the 40s, 50s.
