From the Pond, Tuesday
self | Sept. 30, 2009 | swampsniper

Posted on 09/30/2009 1:00:56 AM PDT by SWAMPSNIPER

I managed to slip through town without getting tarred and feathered by the local democrats, and hung out by the pond for a while.

If I time things for high tide there is usually something going on there.

I love that blue herron. He’s gorgeous.

But help me out please. What type of bird is in the bottom picture?

The bottom pic is an Osprey, Pandion haliaetus. They are fish eaters.

I don’t believe I’ve ever identified an osprey in the wild before. With that beak, I am not surprised he eats fish. He reminds me of the brahminy kites that live in this area. They often wheel above the valley between the ridge where I live and the ridge where our school is.

I hunted most of my life, can’t do that any more but I’ve got to keep going. I haven’t looked at a TV in several years, don’t want to start!

Ospreys have really powerful feet, even compared to other hawks. The can lift a fish out of the water that you wouldn’t believe. I saw one take a fish away from a Bald Eagle one day, the eagle was no match.

Impressive! Thank you for sharing your information with me. I’ve always enjoyed watching birds. They bring peace and beauty to my soul (not to take any work away from the Holy Spirit, of course).

We have a flock of snowy Egrets that regularly patrol our back yard. I enjoy sittin’ on the back porch and watchin’
‘em!

I sometimes pause to look up an unusual bird (to me). A few years back at Ft Monroe outside my office was a nest of a large bird that was quite unusual. A Green Heron. Very unusual looking bird.

Thank you so much for the ping and the beautiful pictures! What a way to start a day! I hope the rest of it goes so well! (and you are not missing anything on TV)

How long do you lie in wait to catch these awe inspiring birds?

"The bottom pic is an Osprey, Pandion haliaetus. They are fish eaters."

I watch them feed out this window where I'm presently sitting. (and all those other birds too.)
