GROVEPORT, Ohio (AP) - An 80-year-old Ohio man is recovering from a week in which he was beaten during a home invasion and then shot while trying to learn about guns.
Ralph Needs says he wouldn't want anyone to experience what he's been through.
He was tied up and pistol-whipped when at least three intruders broke into his Columbus-area home Sept. 20. Needs' nose was broken and his pickup truck, a computer and credit cards were stolen.

I lived in Groveport for five years. God bless the guy, but this misfortune doesn’t surprise me. Groveport is just that kind of place.
Hope this guy has family close...
So go ahead and take those beatings from invaders. Cause AP thinks you maaaay shoot yourself while learning to use a gun.
Someone with knowledge here might be able to explain: Can a 9mm “go off” when someone is loading it, as the article says?
I’m not being flip. I’m sure the man’s son feels terrible, and I hope the man recovers quickly and fully. I’m just asking a question about the 9mm.
>> A 9 mm pistol went off as one of his sons was loading it.
Handy hints:
1/ Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. (I don’t know where old guys pick this up, but we watch ‘em like hawks in our concealed carry classes.)
2/ Grandpa, maybe you can get someone with brains to teach you ‘bout shootin’ irons.
When being handled improperly, pretty much any gun can go off in any number of circumstances. So, the quick answer is yes. The right answer is that this guy needs a better teacher.
Handled properly, no firearm fires merely in the act of loading or unloading.
This man needs to be taught by an NRA Certified Instructor - like me!
First three rules:
Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction.
Keep the firearm unloaded until ready to use it.
Keep finger offer trigger until ready to fire.
These are free and his injury could have been avoided. All else will cost him. Cash only
your a funny guy!!!
