Every now and then, you stumble upon a town that's gotten everything rightgreat coffee, food with character, shop owners with purpose. These 10 spots have it all, in perfectly small doses.
(Excerpt) Read more at travel.yahoo.com ...
As long as they’re not liberal college towns... let’s get a list of great conservative small towns together...
good idea
they left out Hochatown Oklahoma
With 1 of these in flyover country, we are safe from infestation for the moment.
Considering that Lexington, VA is the home of VMI, it is the antithesis of a liberal college town. This was where Thomas Jackson taught, and no one in Lexington can forget that for a second.
Lexington VA is really nice, but we’re looking at Farmville VA. It’s a less pricey, small college town and the drive to Lexington, Richmond or Charlottesville is not bad if we need or want something Farmville doesn’t have.
And W&L (Washington and Lee University)
Breaux Bridge? Isn’t that an actor?
Wow. I’ve actually been to three of them...Saugerties, Mount Vernon and Rockland. All interesting in their own ways.
No Cooperstown NY ? Hopeless.
I can rule out any state that has a bottle deposit, sales tax or personal income tax.
The only house Jackson ever owned is in Lexinton, and tours are available. We need a Jackson today.
I’ll add to that vehicle safety inspections, and no concealed carry.
Wherever Hillsdale College is located.
Bryan, Texas. Actually Bryan/College Station, Texas; but that makes it too large I think! Bryan is a great place...and even Texas Monthly says it is the hidden jewel in Texas.
Yes, I’m proud the town where my alma mater resides made the list. It’s a beautiful town, and I’m glad I was there yesterday. :)
W&L is a rather conservative school too. Not as conservative as VMI, but still rather conservative.
Rural Retreat, Va. The Home of “Dr Pepper.” There isn’t anything there but good people. Left the car keys in the car and no one stole it. I’ll visit there again one day.
I do not understand coffee coming into the equation on what is or is not a great small town.
Hillsdale, Michigan.
True. Cooperstown is a fascinating place, and not just for the Baseball Hall of Fame.
My college town (NOT a liberal school) is in Baldwin, KS - a beautiful small town.
LOLOLOLOL
I’ve been to Beaux Bridges (and am planning to retire in Lexington VA). Beaux Bridges is in the very heart of cajun country .. great people, food, music .. just a fun place to be. Also like St Martinsville nearby that hosts a museum dedicated to the plight of the Cajuns, and how they came to settle in LA. It also has a beautiful, historic church.
I agree wholeheartedly on Lexington, VA. Been there 3 times.
There are a lot of cool small towns in VA.
Not Bridges, it’s Bridge.
I’m an Aggie, but I wouldn’t put Bryan on that list.
I think there are more interesting places in Texas and around the country.
Cayucos is a fabulous town...nice cemetery there. I wouldn’t object to lying there in perpetuity.
Well since you brought up this topic I think I’ll do a repost:
Considering Relocating? Think about Colorado Springs
Outside Magazine just ranking Colorado Springs as the best place to live.
http://outside.away.com/outside/destinations/200908/best-towns-america-colorado-springs.html
Outside Magazine lists as a drawback that it might be get this TOO CONSERVATIVE for some people.
As you know, Money Magazine consistently usually ranks it number 1 as well.

If you or a CONSERVATIVE person is considering relocating, Id invite you to tell them about this family values oasis. Id personally suggest Northern Colorado Springs as being the best and the most conservative.
And just to lay my cards on the table, I am not in the Real Estate business and make nothing off anyone moving here. I just know that Soros and others have dumped millions into Colorado and have succeeding in taking over the state government for the first time in decades recently.
The Springs loses out to Denver and Boulder in the state elections but it is still close enough to make a difference.
Pass this along.
Take America back starting at the center...
Galena, Illinois should be on the list (but don’t tell anyone.)
Not even one of ‘em, I checked. ;’)
Red Headed Step Brother

I have been to the Springs and I like doing business there. With energy sector contacts in that state, I am always considering moving my business there.
Add to that the fastest velodrome in the United States (got my fastest ever 500 meter time there).
Just the way I want it. So many hidden jewels...seriously, you wouldn’t want that spoiled, would you?
sorry I think I did stray off mentally to Beau, the actor. That happens with us seniors.
Cut and Shoot Texas didn’t make the list?
Cayucos was always my overnight stop of choice as I drove up PCH from HB to San Fran. Great place...but there’s not much “there” there...;)
I grew up real near Oxford and MU is my alma mater x’s 2. It was really a cool town in the 50s, 60’s and early 70s. Now I must defer to the opinion of others.
How do you like them HOGS!!!!!!!
Here's downtown:

The view from my porch:

Beautiful pics Uncle Milt.
...I do not like yamas....;)
I’ve heard that home prices in Lexington have blown up since its discovery. Shame. It was on my list.
Of course there are, but this is my hometown! To name a few: Salado, New Braunsfel, Bourne, Wimberly...and I could go on...but, they were asking for a conservative small town.

That may have been true three or four years ago; like everyplace else, prices have fallen since the great crash. In addition, much depends on what your basis for comparison is. As I live in the DC suburbs, prices in Lexington still seem remarkably low to me. If you are coming from (say) Oklahoma or eastern Kentucky, prices will seem high in Lexington.
I envy anyone who has the chance to move there. It is stunningly beautiful, with the views of the mountains and all the historic houses.
I think College Station is better by a score of 43-33............... just teasing.
don't tell anybody about us. We're fine and I like it this way. If we keep attracting people, we'll end up like Austin and have to "keep it weird".
No more Californians, Yankees or parasites... they can go to Austin or Houston.... just like the friendly people, who want a great place to raise kids and the great kids that go to this university, grad and medical school.
gig 'em Aggies..... whoop!
Seems the emphasis was on small towns, with trendy clothing boutiques, coffee shops, and cool restaurants.
Maybe “America’s Coolest Conservative Small Towns” should be a stand alone post - we’ve got some hidden gems here... Thanks for sharing.
