Lincoln Zephyr V-12.

What a classic.

Looks like a really really short bus.

A report that circumstances might cause the Reich to consider itself released from its neutrality pledges towards Belgium caused some apprehension in Brussels, but Berlin flatly denied the report.

Hardly anything more reassuring than a flat denial. Stand down the reserves, nothing to worry about. Sort of like the Iranian denial of any intentions to make nuclear weapons. The Iranians wouldn't anymore lie than the Nazis would. If you can't trust the word of a Nazi, whom can you trust?

Hitler offers peace to Britain and France

In Berlin... In a major speech to the Reichstag, Hitler speaks of his desire for peace with Britain and France. Hitler says that up to now he has done nothing more than correct the unjust Versailles Treaty and that he has no war aims against France or Britain. He blames warmongers like Churchill for the present state of affairs and calls for a European conference to meet and resolve the few remaining differences.

In Poland... The last remnants of the Polish Army, some 8,000 men, surrender to German forces at Kock, in southeastern Poland.

In Finland... The Finns mobilize their standing military forces.

In China... Chinese forces repel Japanese forces to win the First Battle of Changsha. Over 40,000 Japanese troops are estimated to have died in the 11-day battle in which the Japanese expeditionary force suffers its first major setback against Chinese Nationalist forces since the fighting began 2 years ago. As well as heavy troop losses, the 120,000-strong Japanese force has also lost large quantities of arms as it was ambushed by Chinese troops defending Changsha, the capital of Hunan province.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Kock_(1939)

The Polsie Independent Group surrendered on 6 October at 1000. In his last order General Kleeberg wrote that the reason for his decision to capitulate was that they were surrounded and ammunition and food were depleted.

The V-12 engine only has an output of 120 horsepower. I noticed that automobiles of that time had large engines and lots of cylinders, but low output.

Thanks for this post. Interesting story.

The Iroquois was refitted after war broke out and became the Hospital Ship (AH-5) Solace. My Father-In-Law was a Pharmacist mate on the Solace in the Pacific at Saipan, Iwo, and Okinawa. After the war the Solace was sold to Turkey and served into the 1960's as the cruise ship SS Ankara. It was eventually scrapped by Turkish Lines.

One other note about the Solace. All of the video of the Pearl Harbor attack on battleship row was taken off the deck of the Solace, and a lot of the sailors that went into the water were rescues and treated on the Solace.

Funny story: My Father-In-Law was responsible for administering penicillian shots in the evenings. I said he must have gone through a lot of needles with all the GI's goming off Iwo. He replied, "It was penicillian - only needed 1 needle."

Interesting historical note. Didn't know that.
