The hounding of Jews and Poles from the homes which they and their families had dwelt in for generations began as soon as the fighting in Poland was over. On October 7, the day after his “peace speech” in the Riechstag, Hitler appointed Himmler to be the head of a new organization, the Reich Commissariat for the Strengthening of German Nationhood, or R.K.F.D.V., for short. It was to carry out the deportation of Poles and Jews first from the Polish provinces annexed outright by Germany and replace them by Germans and Volksdeutsche, the latter being Germans of foreign nationality who were streaming in from the threatened Baltic lands and various outlying parts of Poland. Halder had heard of the plan a fortnight before, noting in his diary that “for every German moving into these territories, two people will be expelled to Poland.”

A lot of the Germans repatriated to the Reich, and settled in Poland came from the U.S.S.R, under terms of the Non-Agression Pact. Also sent were various German Communists and others who had fled to the U.S.S.R after 1933. They were brought out by the NKVD, and turned over to the Gestapo. They were NOT resettled in Poland.

The Gestapo, in turn, handed over various emigres and refugees from the U.S.S.R to the NKVD.

Adolf Hitler: Man of Peace

A little peace of Poland
A little peace of France
A little peace of Austria
And Hungary perchance...

Hitler extends “an outstretched hand”... you catch that one? sound familiar?

how to score hitlers speech?

even in retrospect its not clear wether he realizes he has finally gone too far and wants to walk back the agression, or wether its still a game where he knows he is going to attack russia nd france and just setting the stage.
personally, i think he realizes he went too far and things will really get out of control.

BEF transported to France without loss

In France... The transportation of the British Expeditionary Force is completed — without loss — under the protection of British and French naval forces. A total of about 161,000 troops, 24,000 vehicles and tanks and 140,000 tonnes of supplies have been delivered to France.

On the Western Front... Small German forces conduct raids of the French lines. There are artillery duels between the Moselle and Saar rivers.

In Germany... Hitler appoints Himmler as Commissioner for Consolidation of the German Race; his task is to eliminate “inferior” peoples from the Reich. Meanwhile, Hitler issues a decree ordering Poles to be evicted from western Poland or killed.

In Washington... The US State Department announces that the United States government will continue to recognize the Polish government-in-exile, presently located at Angers in France.

For all his many faults, at least FDR didn’t fall for Hitler’s ruse. Obama, the Clintons or Carter would have taken the bait and never known what hit them.

Hitler was counting on Britain and France being more worried about the Soviets and thus, making a deal with Hitler to keep the Bolsheviks at bay.

One of the purposes of the Non-Aggression Pact from the German perspective was to encourage Soviet belligerence in Poland and the Baltics, to scare the Western Powers into making a deal with Germany.

i agree. hitler’s pattern was to make a deal with one guy, then down the road stab him in the back. at this point he is probably thinking that he can make a deal with france and UK, then attack russia.

also, the historical record is pretty clear, he never thought england would declare war on him over poland. his first major mis-judge, and the begining of the end for him.

I love these nightly news reports. This one confirms the impression that Hitler’s “outstretched hand” was not taken seriously by the allies. Not that he expected them to. I agree with the notion that his speech was intended to pacify the German audience and any gains he made with Britain, France or the U.S. would be gravy.

"I love these nightly news reports."

From Elmer Davis' report:

"American neutrality is a serious matter.
It seems a pitty that it threatens to provide the war with comic relief."

Indeed. But I'd be curious to learn if any western leaders -- in France, Britain or the US -- took Hitler's October 1939 "peace offensive" seriously. I don't think they did publicly, but possibly "behind the scenes"?
