October 19, 1939 - The Anglo-French treaty with Turkey, securing Turkish Autonomy is signed in Ankara.
This version of Case Yellow is merely a retread [mostly] of the Schlieffen Plan of 1906; and one for which the British and French were ready.
It was during a briefing on Yellow, I believe in November, that Hitler asked Halder or Brauchitsch, about using the Ardennes. They put him off.
I believe it was a combination of two princial factors, the capture of the plans for the early version of Yellow by the Belgians when a Luftwaffe plane carrying a staff officer with the plans landed in foggy weather; and Manstein’s dinner with Hitler prior to assumption of an infantry Corps command [Halder booted him out as Rundstedt’s C/S for pushing the Schickelsschnitt], that got the ball rolling.

The motion picture “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” premieres at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Directed by Frank Capra, this political drama stars James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, Edward Arnold, Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi, Harry Carry; Jack Carson and H.V. Kaltenborn appear in uncredited bit parts.
The plot has young idealist Stewart being appointed a U.S. Senator and fighting corruption in the Senate Chamber. The film is nominated for ten Academy Awards including Best Picture (it loses to “Gone With The Wind”), Best Director, Best Actor (Stewart) and Best Supporting Actor (Carey); it wins an Oscar for Best Writing.
The film is ranked Number 29 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 Greatest Movies. (Jack McKillop)
