Dude, we are stuck with operating systems ideas that originated in the 1970s, if not earlier. Single version file systems? Dude, DEC’s VMS had it beat in 1978 (if I’m not mistaken about the date.) You’re stuck with the UNIX idiocy, and its faithful descendants in Linux, Solaris and Winblows, buster! Wanna talk about OS internals? IE 8 can bring your entire system down trying to open a new tab!

CCleaner

Gets rid of all unnecessary files. I love it. I use it every time I sign off my computer for the day.

I use Image Zoom for Firefox and just love the ability to make virtually any image on the screen bigger with a simple wheel scroll.

SmoothText. It gives Windows 2000 text like ClearType in XP. It also skins Windows components.

I’ll tell you what I really need.

Recently I have been ripping my vinyl to hard drive, and I’d like a really organized streaming player to stream music across my network. Since I’m Drain Bramaged, it needs to handle multiple keywords/tags, and still locate the album or song I want.

Streaming is pretty new to me, I’ve always enjoyed the “moment”, so to speak, of removing the LP and placing in on the turntable, and listening while sipping a Jack n’ Coke, or Honey Bourbon. mmmmmmmm But, with each play, some vinyl goes away, and I want my Grandkids to have them, and enjoy them, too.

Msconfig. Drop a few key items from the startup (after logon) sequence and the time from logon to a working desktop will dramatically decrease.

*********************************************

Spybot S&D in "Advanced" mode allows you to change startup items in windows and it's a great malware remover.

FYI

Latest “FREE” CCleaner is no longer fully functional. Don’t upgrade.

I have had Norton Anti-Virus from the beginning of my computer (1995), and I have NEVER had a worm, virus, etc. and the newest version (2010), includes a spyware killer - and an “idle check” - so when you’re off your computer for awhile - it is checking for any suspicious cookies being placed on your computer.

I’ve had notification of attempts of several types of intrusion products, but none has ever been able to penetrate my system.

For $40 a year - it’s the best deal going for protecting your computer.

Part of the reason people get viruses is because they don’t do the basic cleanup. I use defrag regularly; I always defrag BEFORE and AFTER downloading any new hardware of software. I’ve found that taking the time to do this keeps my system healthier.
