A nice little book on Chesterton's poem is Dale Ahlquist's "Lepanto". The poem plus 114 pages of commentary (there are some obscure references) and a great Chesterton "What If" essay:
What if Don John of Austria had wed Mary Queen of Scots?
What would if had meant for Christendom, England and Europe had a Scottish Catholic Queen had the hero of Lepanto as her Prince consort?

This was a great battle and stiffened the Christian West to resistance against the Turks.
The "Croissant" roll was first baked as a tribute to the victory at Lepanto.

Yes. VDH in one of his books devotes a chapter to Lepanto and mentiones Cervantes.

When I read that sentence I said “WOW”!!!! A 16th century Western woman who NOW and their ilk would think was oppressed in a “patriarchial” society knew what true oppression for women was under Islam.

Neither Islam nor Catholicism comes off well in this period due to the fanaticism and cruelty of the Moors and the corruption within the church,That was 100-200 years earlier, before Martin Luther. By the time of the Battle of Lepanto, the Council of Trent was over and a saint pope was in charge.
