The recipe calls for 536 sheets of edible seaweed, 100+ pounds of rice, 167 pounds of surimi, 67 pounds of cukes and an equal amount of avocados.
The finished product? A 330-foot long California sushi roll to best the world record one made in Maui in 2001. That beast of traditional cuisine was 300-feet long. More than 350 UC Berkeley students on 58 teams will build the ginormous roll on Sunday. The teams, with names like Smashin' Sushi, AvoCALdoes and Roll Me California Style, are made up of students from sororities, fraternities and other campus groups.
After a learning lesson on Japanese food culture, the teams will get to work on the colossal treat most commonly known as a handheld snack.
The amazing feat of food won't be around long, however. Officials will measure every foot -- 18 of which will be vegetarian -- students will chow down on their hard work. There's no estimate on the amount of soy sauce, wasabi or duck sauce it will take to garnish the massive creation. Apparently, just having a degree from the country's best public university just isn't enough in anymore and edging out competition with tough job market with "creator of the world's largest California sushi roll" on a Cal grad's resume will be the ticket to a brighter future.
Sushi would be good at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, served with butter and lemon.
I prefer white tuna.

Sushi is not a handheld snack. You eat it with chopsticks and it’s more of a meal...
That’s a LOT of bait!
How many pounds of waasssaabbii??
Mmmmmmmm.
Lol, you’re right. So much for journalists researching their story, eh?
Plus, who eats duck sauce on sushi? It’s supposed to be wasabi and ginger. Soy sauce does really strange things with sushi and I don’t recommend it at all.
Sushi is pretty common these days and you’d think the journalist could have asked one or two pertinent questions from the people interviewed for this story.
I wonder how many people it would feed.
“Sushi is not a handheld snack. You eat it with chopsticks and its more of a meal...”
Handrolls are popular in California. You probably don’t see those as much in Florida. You also don’t need to eat cut rolls with chopsticks. You can eat them with your fingers and as a snack if you wish. Technically, sushi does not refer to the rolls, but refers to a meal that includes a sour or pickled component, such as cucumber or seafood in vinegar or pickled ginger.
mmmmmmmmm. Lived 4 1/2 years in Japan. And yes, I had Fugu. According to a wise saying, “You are wise to eat Fugu once, stupid to eat Fugu twice.” Although delicious, I only ate it once.
