Assume the statutory speed limit of 70 MPH; the tendency of the local constabulary to ignore violations up to 5 MPH over; A stream of traffic in the right-hand lane averaging 68-72 MPH; and a certain sense of scofflawry and haste on my part that may rise to the level of a ticket without tipping over into the “reckless” category; and the fact that I am therefore in the continuous process of "passing on the left" all of those law-abiding drivers in the right lane.
A question: exactly how fast must I be going before I must make way for a non-emergency vehicle intent upon hitching ride in my trunk?
Someone once told me that 20-over is an acceptable maximum. That’s 90 MPH. I had to ask, "are you serious?"
LOL. My grandchildren would agree with you there. Actually I was quoting 90 from someone else's comment. I'm big on safety, and tend to take it easy overall.
Slower traffic keep right.
Have the courtesy to move to the right long enough to let them pass.
One of my pet peeves is someone in the passing lane that drives along as though there is no one else on the road.
Late one night while en-route to Lafayette Ca from LA, on the 5 going 90, a late model Camero, in the right lane, caught up to my 911 slant. We drove side by side at 120 for a long while until blocked by a pair of slower cars in the same pattern. We slowed and settled into following at a safe distance.
About 5 minutes later, as we crested a hill there was a CHP sitting on the side of the road, pulled onto the hwy, passed my cohort and I, then pulled over the slower moving cars.
The Camero again pulled up on my right, we shared a brief OMG!!! glance, then I turned off at the 580 interchange.

Courtesy works both ways, and the public roadways are not that asshole's private playpen.
I don't find that rude. It is to let the driver in front know that faster traffic is approaching, since it is often difficult to determine the speed of traffic in a rear view mirror. It also gives the front driver time to begin a safe lane change before the faster vehicle arrives.

I spend 2.5 hours every workday traveling in moderately heavy traffic, on 4-lane divided highways, at speeds well in excess of the posted limits. I see a lot of cars, and a lot of drivers. I'd say about 99% of these drivers know how to get along ... the real hazards to the rest of us are not the left-lane slowpokes. Such creatures are almost nonexistent.
The real hazards are the headlight-flashing tailgaters and the lane-weavers.
These foul folk should be taken out and shot.

I had an ambulance materialize behind me on a state road recently. He was so close to me that I could not see his rooftop lightbar in my rearview mirror. As it was daylight, I didn’t have the sense that his lights were on. Most ambulances have the lights in the grille as well, but this one didn’t. It was a bit of a fluke, but maybe your circumstance was similar?

that was why I changed up my siren, he looked at me and I pointed UP......he looked up then gave me the finger and some choice words....and sped off. he came up behind me with my sirens going and blocked me in......I had moved the regular lane as the road was rough, wanted to give them a good ride in the back as they were standing and doing compressions, getting meds ready, etc......I needed to move back to pass a car that I was fast approaching....and he kept even with me. huge JERK. no excuse for him at all.

You are the one causing it so stop holding up traffic. Here in So.Cal I see you guys driving like little old ladies in the passing lane clinging to power as you control the lane making people pass you on the right while you stop traffic flow and cause dangerous lane changes.
It is a weird sight to see and I am amazed at how many of them are white males with both hands on the wheel looking straight ahead like they don't know what is going on around them, it is what I think of as passive aggressive behavior to make up for whatever inadequacies they feel in life, for those moments that they block traffic, they feel in control of events.
I'll flash to pass, but not in traffic, and not until I've given the squatter a bit to look up from staring at his hood ornament and check his mirrors...
Heavy or even medium traffic has different rules, but I get aggravated with people that sit in the left lane going 76 thinking "that's the speed limit, and I have no obligation to move."
Active drivers are not the problem; the problem is people that are doing everything else but driving.

There are states that have addressed this issue in a statutory fashion.
Colorado has a REQUIREMENT that you stay in the right lane unless you are actively passing someone. If you’re loafing in the left lane you can get ticketed for it.
That is a profound truth, which many folks on these threads fail to understand.

Yeah, we get our share of those ... they mostly hang out in the right hand lane, and the rest of us just flow around them.
You admit that you cause it. You claim to know what you are doing, yet there they are trying to get you to quit blocking the lane.

Many states are trying to deal with the passive-aggressive wankers by adopting more German like rules.
