A surprise proposal by the FDA to ban the commercial harvest and sale of Apalachicola Bay raw oysters has Franklin County business and tourism leaders reeling from the implications and united in their resolve to derail the proposed economic threat.
The FDA proposal has not only shocked commercial seafood interests all along the Gulf Coast, it has stunned local business and tourism leaders - especially when they learned that the FDA officials had not analyzed the economic impacts of such a proposal.
The Marxist army marches on, taking out our capitalism, our freedoms, and our jobs. Is it 2012 yet???
Not to mention the only reason to eat in Tallahassee (Barnacle Bill's).
Bar none, Appolachicola Bay oysters are the best that I have tasted. And I have had oysters on five continents.
Apalachicola is still suffering immensely from net bans. This would be another kick in the balls to the people of Franklin County.
Think of the carbon footprint savings. They can get government aid and not have to work and destroy the planet.
Dividing us and conquering us.
We need to back these folks.
Who’s next?
Maybe the State can pass a 10th Amendment bill that says that oysters harvested in the state and eaten in the state are exempt from federal regulation?

I bet the marijuana “harvesters” in California wished that also.
If the threat is so great, why wait until 2011 to implement it?
What is the reason for the ban, disease, pollution?
when the water is warm, there is higher bacteria count. filter feeders like oysters are susceptible to pick up any bloom. thats why people say don’t eat oysters in months without an R. Most likely what is going on is an oyster producer in another state or country sees an opportunity and is bribing the appropriate officials. My favorite source of oysters is a restaurant in Crystal Beach, TX. It has their own oyster beds in East Bay, and won’t harvest if the water temp is above a certain level.
If I remember correctly(too lazy to google), all oysters contain potentially harmful bacteria. It all depends on the consumers health for protection against bacteria. ie: alcoholism, hepatitis, etc.
I have a funny story about East Bay. My husband and I were trout fishing there back in ‘92 when we saw something in the water. It was a sow and 2 baby pigs swimming around right in the middle of the bay. The babies were exhausted and just about to drown. We caught thm and put them into our boat. When we got back to the small marina where we kept our boat at that time, the owner came out to see what we caught. The Houston newspaper called for a fishing report about that time and i told him about our “catch”. he wrote a nice article Couple Has A Swine Time. Everyone got a nice chuckle out of it.
“At the opening of the conference, representatives from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced their plan to ban the commercial harvest and sale of raw oysters during summer months - possibly up to eight months out of the year - in an effort to reduce illness from a naturally occurring warm bacteria - Vibrio vulnificus.”
