Is there an English version of the Guicking letters available on that site (or somewhere else)? They would be made to order for posting on these threads.

I didn't know about this google feature. Impressive.

Berglangenbach, den 11.11.39

My darling,

Today I finally come back to write you some lines. A long march route is behind us. But the goal we have not yet been reached. Also, we do not know where it leads us. Today, a set of transport has arrived. All young people. Who have not already heard and seen. Well, they have yet to experience. What do you say to my vacation? Soon it would come true. The march to the stage, of course, everything has been destroyed. Well, later we still have time. The Memorial Day that I want to pass up. I have written to your parents. How can they come only to those thoughts? It is quite clear that they all attend our engagement. I went straight defeat on such a question. When the last time I called, was Ms Walker on the phone. You went to the seamstress. If you do not you make a new dress? Perhaps the engagement dress? So I'm excited. And about the aunt, I am speechless. Since she has been waiting in the summer already on something like that. Then I was not prepared.

Now, right on time, if we are now going even further back, I'll try to get a pair of rings. Let them taste what they want. If the number of slightly inappropriate fails, he can be modified. Is the proposal correctly? Because of steel ring that is out of the bag. We are currently in the Rhineland, not in Saar. So my child, because just getting the letters. Also one for me. Irene, You have so many afraid of the pack? Now remove beware, every day was one of us determines a column that went with a few cars to the French villages on business. Of course, the participants were allowed to choose this action from the best of the good. A value of 1,000 marks was made so many of the people benefit. There was then a general distribution. And the whole shebang could now be sent away. This is all allowed. So my child, predators do not exist here. The try to make all clear. You must not think that we are herumgefallen in the villages, as the insatiable, no, everything is running properly. Let the postman only moan that I can not confuse you. Give me the next letter once to what you have till now it has received in large crates and suitcases. Pleasure is a suitcase and two boxes. I think the suitcase and the first box you must have been. Something is coming by train. Some of Mr. Miller wants to bring itself and the bike. But please write whether it is there. Otherwise, when it comes, then let me know. But you can all pretty close. I want that is open all itself. Tomorrow I will send you a box via freight. You know, if you want to marry, one can do everything.

The Spicherer height "is French. Yes, my child, if the war lasts longer than six months, then, yes, I can make you a wonderful "long" gift. When the war ended before Christmas, then the rules of war are eliminated. You can even buy me a nice sword as a gift in return. Size of my person 1.73. Is this a joke. Is that all clear? Now are you still curious? And you can make the necessary Caraway already. And now you are already on horse meat? Ei, ei, ei.

Violet, I thank you for your very warm. Also for the cigarettes. And of the packet is not lost. I removed the pieces themselves. Our Kriegssold falls to Mark 12:00 and the front allowance falls away entirely. About the second case, I would prefer to speak with you. Writing would be too much. If we were to connect the second case the same, I'd get paid at Christmas for about 200 marks. Would not that be great. We need to start talking about it again. So my dear little wife, for today I will give you quite a lot of love and kisses, warm greetings.

Always
Your loving Ernst

abb posted: In Britain... Queen Elizabeth broadcasts a message to the women of the Empire, from Buckingham Palace. She says women “have real and vital work to do” and assures women that they are “keeping the Home Front, which will have dangers of its own, stable and strong.”

Then Cougar posted: I have a couple of recordings from the Queen today.

I love it.

Interesting to note how favorable the Arthur Hays Sulzberger run NY Times was to Pope Pius, regarding him as a strong opponent of Nazism. Contrast that with the more recent attitudes of his grandson Pinch Sulzberger who would call Pius “Hitler’s pope.”

"Interesting to note how favorable the Arthur Hays Sul-zberger run NY Times was to Pope Pius, regarding him as a strong opponent of Nazism. "

In fact, the Pope was always a strong opponent of Nazism, recognizing its evils from the beginning. His problem was: how to protect Catholics and the Church from an all-out declaration of war by Hitler against them? And all the Pope really had to defend them with was a piece of paper -- the Concordat signed with Hitler in 1933. So the Pope strove to preserve the Concordat, at almost any cost. In practical terms, this meant at best speaking opaquely about Nazi misbehavior, and at worst, silence in the face of Nazi attrocities.

And the Pope had another reason -- he hoped to serve at war's end in negotiating peace terms between the opposed powers. No doubt, he rightly figured he could do a better job with such war-ending negotiations than had President Wilson and Lloyd George at the end of the First World War. But to do so would require the Pope to remain on good terms with Germans.

As for "Hitler's Pope," he would more accurately be described at this phase (November 1939) as "Roosevelt's Pope" -- or if you prefer, we could call FDR the "Pope's President" ;-) -- since they were apparently of one mind on most issues.

And like Roosevelt, the Pope also did, on occasion, engage in highly secret "back door" plots, for example, starting in November 1939, with German military officers intent on overthrowing Hitler -- what peace terms would the Brits under Neville Chamberlain accept?

At about the same time, Hitler instructed his lieutenant, Martin Bormann to prepare "Operation Pontiff" -- to kidnap and imprison the Pope.

Neither plot was carried out, but they well illustrate, I'd say, the views of Hitler and Pope towards each other.
