[Rep. Patrick] Kennedy barred from communion by bishop

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin has banned Rep. Patrick Kennedy from receiving Communion, the central sacrament of the church, in Rhode Island because of the congressman's support for abortion rights, Kennedy said in a newspaper interview published Sunday.

The decision by the outspoken prelate, reported on The Providence Journal's Web site, significantly escalates a bitter dispute between Tobin, an ultra orthodox bishop, and Kennedy, a son of the nation's most famous Roman Catholic family.

"The bishop instructed me not to take Communion and said that he has instructed the diocesan priests not to give me Communion," Kennedy told the paper in an interview conducted Friday.

Kennedy said the bishop had explained the penalty by telling him "that I am not a good practicing Catholic because of the positions that I've taken as a public official," particularly on abortion.

He declined to say when or how Tobin told him not to take the sacrament. And he declined to say whether he has obeyed the bishop's injunction.

Our churches keep telling us to contact our senators and representatives about this health care bill. It is time they put the power of the Catholic Church alongside us and publicly denounce the politicians who vote for this! Action by them in the form of excommunication can help stop this bill!

Good point

m And if they get criticized for using the pulpit let them point out that REV Jesse and REV Al do it all the time

"Too bad Teddy wasn’t given the same treatment years ago".

Bishop Tobin should be heralded and rewarded as a hero of the Church.

The Bishops and Priests of Pelosi's and Kerry's Dioceses need to take the exact same measures.
And, yes, the same with the Bishop of Ted Kennedy's Diocese should have taken place, and Kennedy's Mass should have never been televised. That was an embarrassment.

Some Catholics do show "'Abysmal Apathy", as Bishop Tobin has stated.

He's 110% right.

We need all Bishops to speak-out and stand-up in the same manner as Bishop Tobin.

Religion cannot be anything more than a social game to those who won’t accept absolute values. I watched the Methodist Church being overwhelmed by marxists over a span of years, and other denominations have gone even further left. Catholics may hold out longer due to the powerful central role of the Pope.

What’s the big deal? Communion isn’t about forgiveness of sins.
