It was 46 years ago today, November 22, 1963, that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Here are a series of videos that bring back the events of the day, beginning with the coverage by Walter Cronkite and a local Dallas TV Station. The media kept the public totally uninformed about JFK’s personal life when he was president that people were crying for a week when the events unfolded on tv. Everyone thought he was a family man and had no clue about his womanizing and other associations.
BOTH Bush’s fault!
...and Reagan’s fault!...and man-made global cooling also had something to do with it.
Someone came on to the stage where I was playing with a basketball and said that Kennedy had been shot. I didn't think much of it as one of my classmates was named Kennedy.
When we returned to our classroom the school principal spoke over the intercom at length about what had happened and what it would mean to us.
At home my mother was crying which confused me knowing as I did that my parents were Nixon supporters.
It was one of my first encounters with death and loss. There were no cartoons shown until after the funeral some days later.
Sixth Grade for me...and my family were Boston Irish and actually connected to the Kennedys in an oblique way (domestics at Hyannis), and not only THAT, my family was in the process of moving to a new house on the week on the funeral. The moving company took the day off, as did all the utilities, so my Mom was in a house with 5 children, another one on the way, no furniture except a TV with nothing but the Kennedy Funeral on it, no telephone, and a nation in trauma. Since I was the oldest (11) I did what I could do to be helpful.
Oh...Mom is a Republican NOW! Times have changed.
People were out in the street crying on my block. My family were also Nixon supporters, but the events were so shocking that people just stayed home for days and watched it on tv.
Jackie Kennedy never cried during the funeral or at the Pres. Johnson swearing-in on the plane. We all thought she was so strong, but she must have known about her philandering husband's escapades.
His health problems and medications were another issue kept from the public.
Yeah, it was certainly Oswald's day and was certainly not JFK's day for sure. I've been up on the sixth floor of the observatory and have looked through the window from which Oswald made his shots and have thought, “what's the probability of me making that shot”? So, when thinking it, consider that Oswald was on the sixth floor, shot down and at a target moving away at an oblique angle which any deer hunter will state I believe is the most difficult shot to perform. And, he did it with a surplus WWII Italian rifle. Then, keep in mind that Oswald only qualified as Marksman while in Marine Corps book camp which is the lowest category of qualification. So, like I said, luck was definitely on his side and not on JFK's - now you grassy knoll folks can take over if you like...
2 of 3 shots into a man sized target from 87 meters away does not make for an incredible shooter.
You may be on to something about Jackie. As I recall she had seriously considered divorcing JFK some time in the late 1950’s but by that time JFK was on the national scene and I believe Joseph Kennedy convinced her not to-he wanted his son (any son) to be president.
That's right. Jackie may have known something of Kennedy's escapades, but there is no way she could have known the full extent of his extra-marital activities. JFK was totally out of control with Marily Monroe and the mafia don's girlfriend. How did he fit presidential duties into his schedule...
Oddly... I remember that the moment she told us of the shooting, she was wearing a yellow sweater and a checked black, yellow, and brown skirt.
We went to our friend's house, The Lewis family, after school. Mom was comforting Mrs. Lewis. Dad and Mr. Lewis were on their way north for the opening of deer hunting.
My Uncle Bill, my father and I were deer hunting that day. My uncle crossed a county road in the pre-dawn light (as my dad and I were exiting our truck) and was struck by a pickup truck, thrown 50 feet and instantly killed. His obit did not appear in the local paper until three days later. Rest in Peace, Uncle Bill.
Isn’t it strange how we remember such little details from that day?
Like the yellow sweater and the checked black, brown and yellow skirt?
