Barack Obama has seen the future — and it lives in a cave.

The article says he doesn’t “barter”. It didn’t say he wouldn’t accept gifts. He has friends who will feed him an hour’s hike away. He scrounges for cast-off food which might include outdated canned goods. He is like a lot of these people: able to live their “ascetic” or “righteous” lifestyles only because others don’t.

I always had trouble with the Moonies and their fundraising at airports years ago when it seemed to me they were giving the message of “Live materialistic lives and give me your filthy lucre so I can live my righteous lifestyle.” This guy is quite self-sufficient if the more extensive article I found by Googling his name is correct in that he uses no government welfare programs (except maybe as his landlord). Nevertheless, he depends on wickedness to subsidize his virtue.

does he have any human relationships? is he able to offer any hospitality? his life seems a bit gross to me... and self-centered...

Scavenger. He grows nothing, produces nothing but animal waste. He is not living, he is existing. Note he can do even that only as long as there is civilization to leech off of.

"The understanding that, really, we all possess nothing is the cornerstone of all spiritual endeavors and religions,"
That sounds SO Mother Earth, but let him get a can't-ignore toothache, major medical problem, etc. and see where he runs to.

Some years ago there was a story about a back-to-nature type who took a rafting trip with his son and guide. "I've had enough of civilization." he said. Two days into the mission the kid comes down with appendicitis and the guy had no qualms about the guide radioing for a medivac airlift back to that damned civilization.

A 48-year-old man who has not used money in nine years and resides in a desert cave in Moab, Utah, said he loves his simple existence.

I hope this man realizes that he will be a fugitive from Justice when he doesn't pay his tax penalty for not having health insurance.

Despite his meager belongings and lack of a traditional home....

Actually, the first traditional home is a man cave.

I guess I’m ok with this...as long as he pays property taxes, has his cave up to building codes, payes fire dues, has an approved sewer connection or septic tank, etc. All the same requirements I have to abide by.

This could be me, but I have an 8x12 shack, bathe regularly, and quit making money to give to the gooberment beast.

Simple is better, for me. But no-one is required to support my life-style. Except for the internet and computers, I'm pretty much living life as it was done in the early/mid 1800s.
