Man happy with simple life in Utah cave
upi ^ | Nov. 22, 2009

Posted on 11/23/2009 11:55:24 AM PST by JoeProBono

MOAB, Utah, A 48-year-old man who has not used money in nine years and resides in a desert cave in Moab, Utah, said he loves his simple existence.

Daniel Suelo said while he shops for clothes by going through garbage, he is content with living an existence where he does not have to worry about a job, mortgage or other concerns that plague most U.S. residents, The Denver Post reported Sunday.

"The understanding that, really, we all possess nothing is the cornerstone of all spiritual endeavors and religions," Suelo said.

A former Peace Corps volunteer, Suelo said he also will not barter for food or rent because he considers bartering another form of currency.

Suelo began his unique style of living nine years ago despite having a master's degree in accounting and a degree in anthropology.

Despite his meager belongings and lack of a traditional home, Suelo insists he will never embrace a regular lifestyle again.

"I have no idea what the future holds, and I don't worry about it. But the longer I do this, it seems absurd to go back," he told the Post. "It would be like going back to slavery."

Daniel Suelo did the unthinkable and gave up all the worldly pleasures

All of 'em, huh?

Looks like the leg of a red, blowup doll behind him if you ask me.

School loans? Or did he just got to school, parasite off our tax dollars; then decide to let us eat his lifestyle? Imagine, some pretty young thing hasn't snatched him up.

A bit extreme but I feel that everyone would benefit from simplifying their life. Thoreau said “accounts should be kept on one's thumbnail” Imagine what he would think today.

Never heard of funemployment? Here's Urban Dictionary's definition: "The condition of a person who takes advantage of being out of a job to have the time of their life. I found a burrito with only one bite in it; funemployment rocks!"

Looks like BS to me. Where does he get the fuel for the lamps or even, say, candles. Not in a garbage can. Who bought his glasses and if they break who will renew them. No garbage can or dumpster. In todays world it is impossible to live without “some” money.

The article says he doesn’t “barter”. It didn’t say he wouldn’t accept gifts. He has friends who will feed him an hour’s hike away. He scrounges for cast-off food which might include outdated canned goods. He is like a lot of these people: able to live their “ascetic” or “righteous” lifestyles only because others don’t.

I always had trouble with the Moonies and their fundraising at airports years ago when it seemed to me they were giving the message of “Live materialistic lives and give me your filthy lucre so I can live my righteous lifestyle.” This guy is quite self-sufficient if the more extensive article I found by Googling his name is correct in that he uses no government welfare programs (except maybe as his landlord). Nevertheless, he depends on wickedness to subsidize his virtue.

Scavenger. He grows nothing, produces nothing but animal waste. He is not living, he is existing. Note he can do even that only as long as there is civilization to leech off of.

"The understanding that, really, we all possess nothing is the cornerstone of all spiritual endeavors and religions,"
That sounds SO Mother Earth, but let him get a can't-ignore toothache, major medical problem, etc. and see where he runs to.

Some years ago there was a story about a back-to-nature type who took a rafting trip with his son and guide. "I've had enough of civilization." he said. Two days into the mission the kid comes down with appendicitis and the guy had no qualms about the guide radioing for a medivac airlift back to that damned civilization.

I hope this man realizes that he will be a fugitive from Justice when he doesn't pay his tax penalty for not having health insurance.

This could be me, but I have an 8x12 shack, bathe regularly, and quit making money to give to the gooberment beast.

Simple is better, for me. But no-one is required to support my life-style. Except for the internet and computers, I'm pretty much living life as it was done in the early/mid 1800s.

The guy is 48. I think his school loans would have been paid off long ago. And remember, a “good” school in 1983 would have cost him $6k a year, and thats before any aid.

So, I think the educated parasite argument is probably not applicable.

Weird, anti social dude argument seems pretty valid though.
