Drug-resistant bacteria on increase in U.S.: study

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cases of a drug-resistant bacterial infection known as MRSA have risen by 90 percent since 1999, and they are increasingly being acquired outside hospitals, researchers reported on Tuesday.

They found two new strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus -- MRSA for short -- were circulating in patients and they are different from the strains normally seen in hospitals.

Ramanan Laxminarayan of Princeton University in New Jersey and colleagues studied data on lab tests from a national network of 300 microbiology laboratories in the United States for their study.

"We found during 1999-2006 that the percentage of S. aureus infections resistant to methicillin increased more than 90 percent, or 10 percent a year, in outpatients admitted to U.S. hospitals," they wrote in a report published in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.

Really? I don’t think that is the only cause. Try dirty hospitals. I’ve had MRSA & it wasn’t due to the fact I didn’t take all my meds. I picked it up after being in the hospital.

“Drug-resistant bacteria on increase in U.S.: study”

Not to worry.
MRSA will only be a problem for common people after Obamacare takes hold.

Only The President, Senators, and members of The House of Representatives
will have access to doctors that will prescribe antibiotics for MRSA.
Oh, and folks like the ones working for Goldman-Sachs (that got the
H1N1 vaccine).

Under the new rationing scheme, the little people will at best just
get some medical-marijuana brownies to ease them through their terminal
pain.

Oh, I suppose some might survive with a good-old amputation of a
limb(s) infected with MRSA.

This is where I’d usually post a (/SARC), but I fear this is a very
likely outcome of Saturday night’s Senate vote.

But having narrowly missed amputation of a MSRA-infected leg,
or probably death...
I just can’t get jovial about the subject.

Does one have to be hospitalized for treatment of MRSA?

Not normally, but as the name implies this bacteria is Methacillin resistant, so they prescribe a different antibiotic like bacatrim.

I have/had it twice this year. Two major back surgeries later and lots of vancomycin and zyvox.

I’ve been hospitalized twice this year. Well over 200,000 in medical bills. Two epidural abscess removals and laminectomy. My zyvox pills are 100 bucks a piece. Twice daily for 42 days. I didn’t get mrsa in a hospital. I have NO idea where I got it. It doesn’t matter. The fact is that bacteria wants to kill me. I’m lucky I’m not paralyzed thanks to a couple great neurosurgeons.

epidural abscess removals and laminectomy

I had to looked that up. How did you know you had it? It was on the spine?

So much info out there on the flu and you heard very little MRSA. This is awful! Thank God for good doctors. Do you still need meds after leaving hospital? Does it come back? What does anyone look for?

And the scary part, we have no idea where it is or how one contacts it - other than the hospital and not everyone in the hospital gets contaminated. I find it all so weird - so deadly, so destructive, so hidden and yet it's the flu we heard about nonstop. Where it not for FreeRepublic - I would be clueless! Thank YOU!

Ill try to answer your questions one at a time.
I knew I had it due to severe left flank pain coupled with a fever of 104. I was completely immobilized by pain. An MRI is usually the common method of detection along with blood cultures.
Yes, the abscess was in the epidural space in the lubar region. The occurance is about 3 in 10000 hospital admissions with questionable prognosis.
I’m currently finishing up a 42 day course of treatment of Zyvox, an oral antibiotic.
Does it come back? I’ve had two bouts this year. I have followed decolonization protocol this time. Studies question the effectiveness of decolonization.
You don’t have to look anywhere. It will find you. Many people are carries of MRSA. It resides on the skin and the nasal passages.
I believe my immune system was compromised due excessive alcohol use. I pray every day this will not return.

THANK YOU!!

Oh! Now this is good knowledge. You can build up your immune system. Are you taking probiotics along w/your antibiotic? Unfortunately, antibiotic doesn't know the difference and it kills the good bacteria along w/the bad - so taking probiotics replaces the good bacteria.

I take this honey but looking at the info on it - it mentions it's effectiveness on MRSA topically - the site has some pictures.

Active Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey has been researched by Dr. Peter Molan Senior Lecturer, Biochemistry Department, Waikato University, New Zealand for over 20+ years. Dr. Molan found that manuka honey seems to naturally destroy staph aureus, streptococcus, h. pylori (helicobacter pylori) as well as MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staph Auereus and VRE (Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci).

Some of it is due to the fact that we are packing animal feed with tons of antibiotics. That needs to stop yesterday.

They have probiotics at the health food store. They also have one that needs refrigeration. Also at Mercola.com and Dr Marshall's premier Research labs or Quantum Research Labs.
Perhaps, also look into chlorella. I get mine at www.mercola.com. They say the broken cell wall chlorella is best. Who knows. Also Dr. Marshalls site may have it. You can call both places are they can give you more info. Or seach chlorella and see if you are interested.

Get the Active Manuka Honey - 16+ or higher. My last order from Manuka was 16+ - I forgot what they said - something to do w/bees or whatever because my order before was 17+. But 16+ or above should do the trick. Expensive but you are worth it!

All the best to you. And thanks for the info - it lives on the skin and in the nose. Just wondering if you ever get rid of it or just keep it under control?

I don’t know if I’m stuck with it or not. I’m definately buying some of the honey. National Geographic did a story on it in September that confirms some of its properties. I wonder if it comes medical grade? (Less risk for other microbes, infection). Also looks good for IBS and other gastro problems. Thanks for all your info!

I am very sorry you have the MRSA problem. I have been on bactrim & rifampin for MRSA. The rifampin landed me back into the ER with the side effects. Since getting MRSA when I got my liver biopsy I’ve had it a few times. I now use Mesosilver when it looks like it is showing up. My doctor thinks I am nuts but I can’t take those pills.

I believe 16+ or higher is considered medical grade. I got an email from them - let me see if I can find it - I never completely read it - they mentioned something about new products but didn't take note what they were.

Here’s part of the email - see 2nd paragraph.

In the meantime, the mild Tea Tree Soap has taken
the place of the Propolis Soap. We have found a new
manufacturer willing to produce the propolis soap.
We hope that they will be able to have the soap ready
for sale by the end of this year, or first quarter
of 2010.

The same happened with the Woundcare 18+, the manu-
facturer no longer fills this product, even though
it was helping our customers as a wound care dressing.
A new product will be ready soon, it will most likely
be named Honey Care 18+. Availability 1st quarter 2010.
In the meantime, you do not have to wait, you can
simply use the Active Manuka Honey UMF 16+ from the
500g / 17.5 oz jar, to help heal wounds, as 99% of our
customers are already are using the honey from the jar
for wound care. To view real photos of wound healing
with Active Manuka UMF 16+, go to: (some photos are of
a graphic nature, but reality)

I was on Bactrim for 6 weeks via PICC line in January. However, the MRSA came back. What is mesosilver? You mention liver biopsy. Were you/are you a heavy drinker?
I’ve never had any skin symptoms. Mine has shown up in the spine. I believe my first introduction to MRSA was 20 years ago at 18 from a lancing of a pilonidal cyst and it was dormant all these years.

I hope you get better and beat this once and for all.

I have had Hep C since before they knew there was a Hep C. Got it from a blood transfusion when I was a teenager. I don't drink now but before I knew I had it I drank. I've tried the interferon but it didn't work for me. I just live with it. Sad thing was when I got my biopsy it showed my liver as being in good shape. After all the drugs I have been on I don't know what the next biopsy will show.

Mesosilver is a colloidal liquid silver that I have been drinking for a few years. MRSA can't live on silver so I pour it on infections I get. Although drs say it doesn't work so far it has for me. Raw honey works too. I swear the 2 saved my foot after a bug bite went into MRSA. I don't look blue either & my dr can't figure out how I get my hep C viral loads down. He knows I take it & says go ahead but you are wasting your money.....Yet he can't say it doesn't work either.
