Looking for a new PC, should I wait ‘till after the black Friday frenzie or jump on the “bargains” being offered?

Depends on what sort of computer you need, defined largely by what tasks you need to accomplish.

Black Friday bargains never offer the truly good stuff; they’re more of a way of clearing back inventory of the crappy stuff. If all you need is a netbook, then sure, Black Friday is for you. But it depends.

Unless money is an issue I wouldn’t get the bargains. I found the cheapest netbook deals right now are 1- three cell battery and 2-Windows XP not Windows 7
for $100 more I got W7, bigger hard drive, better name brand and a six cell battery.

My inclination would be to buy now.
There might not be much to choose from after BF.

But if you can afford to wait for a little while longer, I would.

if you google black friday you will find lists where you can see what is on sale and decide. WM and Best Buy both have 198.00 notebooks, I didn’t pay attention to the computers.

It doesn’t matter that much.

In 6 months they’ll be $100 less anyway or have more capability.

I have an old Commodore 64 that’s just been setting around. I’d probably let it go for 50 bucks.

Get one built locally by a shop that has been around for a while. Made to order with a five year warranty that is LOCAL !

The personal service and long term service off sets the additional cost over a big box special in my experience.

Good luck on yer new PC buy !

Keep following the ads daily -- I just bought two machines (one laptop [Best Buy]/one desktop [Staples]) about a month ago now and those prices *still* haven't been beaten -- even by black friday prices. So my advice is to figure out what you NEED (not want) and look for that configuration. You'll find a "norm" in price points among the various dozen+ competitive dealers and office-supply houses. Use that number to help you identify what a 'great deal' actually is.

That said, I'm going to try for a desktop at OfficeMax on Friday morning.

You know you can usually get around $100 for those on Ebay. ...more if you still have the box and manuals.

I have the configuration in mind … just wondering if I should buy now or wait a month and see what is offered in the new year? Newer computers and all that.

If you need one before January, then it may almost be a now-or-never thing since inventories tend to deplete over the next week or two... and often don't get restored until early-mid January. I don't want to oversell that point, but it's not unheard of.

check techbargains.com, bfads.net for a couple of deal-watcher sites.

Oh, one more thing: the monitor prices I’ve seen lately are unreal!... 22-24” LCD’s for the low $100’s... I got a Samsung 24” that’s both monitor and TV for $250 at buy.com. Heck the monitors are a better deal than the PC’s are right now.

What kind of specs are you talking about?

For instance, my mother does nothing but surf the net get email with her computer. I’m recommending she ditch the standalone computer and hook a $199 Acer Aspire Revo to her HD tv and use a wireless keyboard/mouse. It’s more powerful than her old Dell desktop and it will probably give her a lot more things to use on her computer, by allowing her to use it for entertainment content as well.

(If we are talking desktop) Contact Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com and build your own.

For Laptops contact the same people look for factory refurbished (which usually means a computer sent back for whatever reason and repackaged.)

No, I make my living on my computer. Course development, student manuals and maintenance manuals. I spend 30% of my time on the Internet finding pictures and grapahs to support my courses. My overall computer use … Internet research.
