THREE Australian experts are making waves in the medical community with a report suggesting swine flu may have developed because of a lab error in making vaccines.
"It could have happened in a lab where somebody became affected and then travelled with it," virologist Dr Adrian Gibbs said yesterday.
Conjuring up a vision of Frankenstein's fictional monster fleeing the laboratory, he added: "Things do get out of labs and this has to be explored. There needs to be more research done in this area.
"At the moment there is no way of distinguishing where swine flu has come from."
The research, published in the Virology Journal on Tuesday, was compiled by two former researchers at the Australian National University - Dr Gibbs and programmer John S. Armstrong.
Dr Jean Downie, once the head of HIV research at Westmead Hospital, was also involved.
The article claimed the swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus that appeared in Mexico in April has at least three parent genes which originated in the US, Europe and Asia.
"The three parents of the virus may have been assembled in one place by natural means, such as by migrating birds, however the consistent link with pig viruses suggests that human activity was involved," the research found.
Within two days of them publishing their findings there were more than 16,000 downloads of the article.
"What we wanted to do was instigate debate about this again because we still don't know the source of this virus," Dr Gibbs said.
The research suggested more tests be done on laboratories "which share and propagate a range of swine influenza viruses".
It said that if the virus was generated by laboratory activity it would explain why it had "escaped surveillance for over a decade".
Dr Gibbs said it was not the first time lab errors had been made, with evidence foot and mouth disease in England had been born out of a lab mistake and circumstantial evidence that Spanish influenza in 1918 and Asian influenza in 1957 reappeared decades later because of mistakes.
"Measures to restore confidence include establishing an international framework co-ordinating surveillance, research and commercial work with this virus and a registry of all influenza isolates held for research and vaccine production," the report concluded.

Ayep.
This was made by man. Sorry for the tin-foil hat moment, but I believe that it was done to put pressure on people to accept government control of Medicine. I honestly believe that the lab this “escaped” from was a government lab. Or a government funded lab.
It’s not as if we don’t have evidence of scientists doing things to create an environment by which they continue to get funding... CRU anyone?
Okay. Is this just speculation, or do they have specific ideas of where it might have come from?
I understand the concept of how it might happen, but this seems very close to the line of hysteria-inducing reporting.
Virology Journal
I am up to my neck with the AGW debate right now, but this is a little bit different. In the AGW hoax, people are fudging data, intimidating scientists, indoctrinating children and otherwise engaged in similar activities that tie into the HUGE sums of money being invested in the resulting industry to “fix” a problem that doesn’t exist.
That is a bit different to say that a virus was deliberately unleashed on people for a political end.
Now, that isn’t to say that there aren’t people in the government (particularly THIS one) who might gleefuly opine that “no good crisis should go to waste”, but I would need some proof before I cross that line and say they did it.
I may fully believe that the liberals in this country have embraced the Cloward-Piven strategy of bringing socialism to the USA, but at least I have proof of a connection in the form of a photograph of Cloward and Piven standing behind ex-President Clinton as he signed the “Motor Voter” law that was another nail in the coffin of our democracy and capitalist system.
I need more than some researchers saying it can happen. We all know it can happen accidentally. It is another jump to say it happened deliberately.
More information on the theory that H1N1 is lab created .
This is a new thread article ping .
Smokin’ Joe I pinged your list and some other freepers to this new thread .
Yes, agree with what you say... :-)
Which direction will it go, how fast will it spread, which cities will be most vulnerable..........All this info which can be used to help counter the event of a legitimate death dealing pandemic or bio warfare......
Also this virus de-evolved rather quickly - that has a "man-made feel" to it. Nature isn't sloppy.
"It could have happened in a lab where somebody became affected and then travelled with it," virologist Dr Adrian Gibbs said yesterday.
Not to be picky, but the title and the quote are not in sync.
The virus produced wasn't that effective - it killed quickly and de-evolved quickly - not an elegant design.
Something Bin Laden bought from a second tier Russian scientist?
Also, the CDC panic response wasn't normal... But, like you - I don't think our government had anything to do with it... other than to try to protect us.
Like my late Dad who was in Biological warfare (BW), also known as germ warfare, the use of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, other disease-causing biological agents, said if we could have souped um’ up we would have but the little critters just will not cooperate. Infect us/them tough to control and human error was always a major concern. Never got one that would iin effect, wipe large masses.
I too, have believed that this was the case. The general structure of the virus made me very suspicious that it was created in a lab.
Well, it could be that. No doubt. Terrorists had not flown planes into buildings before 9/11.
I don’t think one has to put on a tin-foil hat to think it could be caused by terrorists. It is a possibility.
FYI.
Flu starts in Asia because there’s a cultural farm animal DNA mixing that we don’t have here or in Mexico. Also seasonal flu follows patterns... it doesn’t start in the summer. And natural flu doesn’t have time to devolve by the time it gets to us... if it did - we’d never experience it. That said, like you - I have doubts. Just something to consider.
I believe your father was right - if it was easy, we'd all be wiped out by now. Nice to know nature doesn't co-operate ...
