I looked it up once because I had a wild hog hind quarter I didn’t want to cook. Apparently, the dog has an enzyme in it’s stomach that humans don’t have (anymore?) that allows it to process raw and even slightly rotten meat. Kind of like a buzzard I guess.

So yes, from what I have read and learned, raw meat is ok for a dog.

I would ABSOLUTELY cook it, thoroughly!

I have 2 goldens also.
Cooking their food does not hurt them, but there is always a risk with raw.

By the way, some people/vets argue that the dog is LACKING if they are not given some raw meat because the nutrients THEIR body needs is cooked out.

Depending on where it was from. I live in Wisconsin, and we (along with many other states) have had chronic wasting disease in deer.

I would never serve undercooked venison.

BTW, if you don't care for venison, mix it with ground beef, and use it as a "filler" in any casserole, sauce, etc.

I would mix it with pork sausage, form it into patties, cook it, and eat it with biscuits and jam!

There are actually raw feeding groups on yahoo groups. Most on my German Shepherd list are proponents of raw feeding. Bones and all.

By the way, seems to be the consensus that no cooked bones should be given to a dog - any cooked bone can splinter. Raw bones are fine.

If the deer carries the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease, feeding the raw meat to your dog can pass that on to him. I would cook the meat to be certain to kill any bacteria.

Share it with the dogs....seems like a good idea.

If this is frozen from LAST YEAR...then it is likely for animal consumption. If it was properly handled and is from this year's hunt, add 50% ground pork and enjoy with a few beers or your favorite beverage.... The dogs will eat the left overs and love ya fo it!

Years back I almost raised one of my hunting dogs on raw deer meat. He loved it. I would send him outside with a chunk frozen and he would knibble away at it.

I save the liver, gizard, and heart from pheasants I shoot for the dog. I wouldn’t have a problem giving it to them raw, but my wife insists on sauteeing them in BUTTER for the darn dog.

Personally, I think raw meat is healthy for dogs.

If you’re worried, it will only take you a couple minutes to brown it in a frying pan.

You could have fried it in the amount of time you posted this thread. The dog would probably like the fried crust too...

Google "BARF Diet"... Bones And Raw Food. Are old vet used to push this diet. I read about it, looked interesting and made sense. Problem is the expense and logistics. But according to folks who follow that diet raw deer is fine, just about any raw item. Even chicken bones and all...

Most likey it is safe to feed them raw. However, why take the chance ? Cook it in a pan on the stove. That way they are less likey to get sick as in diarrhea. Trust me there is nothing worse than waking up to dog diarrhea in the morning. Also, start with a small quantity in their kibble to see how their digestive system reacts to the change in food.

Buy dog kibble, then take the dear meat, cut in strips along the grain, marinade in honey, garlic and red pepper, place on sheet pans and bake at 200 degrees until it looks like jerky!

We give our dog the deer bones, which have some meat left on them. They can handle it just fine. In fact, there’s something called a “BARF diet,” a healthy home-prepared diet for dogs and cats that includes raw meat.

Just think about what they eat in the wild.

Or you could cook it up and eat it yourself. Thyme and sage kill the gamey flavor. Check some recipies on the Internet, you’ll love the results.
