As for the president, Palin joked that she was looking at a magazine cover of Obama and Chinese president Hu Jinato during an airplane flight. A nearby passenger stated, "Hu's the Communist," she related.

And, Palin said, "I thought he was asking a question."

the quotes are from twitter. They are NOT Gov Palin’s exact quotes just what the person twittering is able to remember about the speech.

Yeah, the AM made a command decision. Frankly, the other thread was much more specific, but hey, I didn’t make the call.

Various people Twittered to the outside in real time what Sarah was saying. I wish there was video—, but that is not allowed at the Gridiron dinners.

Darn, was really enjoying it.

From the WSJ:
With Humor, Palin Attempts Media Truce
Former Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, never a big fan of the mainstream media, stepped into the lion’s den Saturday night and attempted to call a truce, of sorts.
Ms. Palin spoke at the winter dinner of the Gridiron Club, an organization of Washington journalists where parody and satire are the required entertainment form, and made light of her jousting with the Fourth Estate.
“Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts,” she told the assemblage of senior Washington journalists. “And when you don’t, you end up in a place like this.”
Ms. Palin also made light of the intramural warfare that broke out within the John McCain presidential campaign after she became his running mate–a warfare that made great copy for many of the journalists who were in the room at a Washington hotel. Ms. Palin implied she was happy to be beyond the campaign experience, and to have survived the not-for-attribution attacks from McCain campaign aides that followed. She said she is enjoying, by contrast, her current tour around the country to promote her new book. “The view is so much better from inside the bus than under it,” she cracked.
One of her jokes referred to the famous strains between her and Steve Schmidt, the McCain campaign manager famed for his shaved head. “If I ever need a bald campaign manager, all I’m left with is James Carville,” she joked.
She also got in a dig at her vice presidential campaign rival, Joe Biden, saying that if she had won he would be the one on book tour. Taking off from the title of her book (”Going Rogue”), she said Mr. Biden’s book likely would have been entitled “Going Rogaine,” a reference to the vice president’s hair-challenged profile.
But despite her history of tension with the Fourth Estate, Ms. Palin closed with a reference to her own background as a journalism student and sports broadcaster and a tribute to the importance of journalists and their role in keeping politicians honest.

Barney should stick to what he does best, prostitution rings, no one does it as good as Barney

And poor Andrea Mitchell, when she heard the Commie joke, she just didn’t get it, she probably thought “Commie, whats wrong with being a Communist”

One of those OTHER "duplicate" threads is now only "locked" (i.e., no longer "pulled") -- so you can now read the OLDER comments, but not post NEW ones...

Sarah Palin at the Gridiron Dinner takes shots a self, journos
By Lynn Sweet on December 5, 2009 8:14 PM
WASHINGTON—What! Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, palin’ around with a group of elite journalists? She was, the Gridiron Club winter dinner, where she took shots at herself and the journos in the audience.

I’m taking a quick break from the dinner to file this, so I’m not ready to say yet if she has given one of those speeches that turned around her image. But in her 11 minute, 36 second speech, she did no harm to herself. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) speaks in about 15 minutes.

Some of Palin’s lines:

“You betcha. Who talks that way?”

On deciding to speak to the Gridiron Club “Sometimes you just got to trust your instincts. And when you don”t, you end up in places like this.”

“At least now I can put a face to the newspapers I do read.”
