The halfback “Jack Robinson” mention of UCLA is the Jackie Robinson of baseball fame. Very cool.

I wondered about that. Thanks for confirming.

You are welcome. His older brothers was also on that UCLA team as a flanker.

Whew! That was a close shave. That Cal extension campus out in Westwood has yet to defeat the Trojans, whose record against the Bruins since 1929 is now 5-0-2.

It is also noteworthy that the crowd of 103,300 was the largest ever to watch a football game west of the Mississippi—amazing, since we drew only 44,000 for our homecoming game against Washington last week.

Now it’s on to Pasadena. Go, Trojans! Beat the Vols!

I looked up the 1939 NFL Team Records. Man how some things have changed.
Teams
  1. Chicago Cardinals
  2. Chicago Bears
  3. Detroit Lions
  4. Pittsburgh Pirates
  5. Brooklyn Dodgers
  6. Cleveland Rams
  7. Green Bay Packers
  8. Washington Redskins
  9. Philadelphia Eagles
  10. New York Giants
And the Giants lost the NFL Championship to the Packers 27-0, played in Green Bay on Sunday Dec. 10, 1939
Now there's so many teams they all basically suck(1). Pete Rozelle sure got his 'parity'.

the NE Pats won all those games by cheating, so they suck too.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for the Rose Bowl, if I were you. After all, the Vols are not only undefeated, they are unscored on.

Another football player who seems to be headed for fame is Joe Shell, who plays for the Trojans but hasn’t seen a lot of action this year. He seems to be headed for a career in politics. I predict that Shell and Richard Nixon, who played football for the Whittier Poets and is now a lawyer in the Bank of America building in Whittier will one day run against one another for governor of California.

Last year, Duke was also undefeated and unscored upon, but we beat them in the Rose Bowl 7-3.

Only 48,000 showed up for the 1938 NFL championship game. As noted in the article, USC draws bigger crowds at the Coliseum.

If UCLA football star Jack Robinson has the talent to make it into major league baseball, that’s where he should go. He’ll earn far more fame and fortune as a professional baseball player than he will playing professional football.

Yep. way back when College Football had a much larger fan base than the NFL. Even when I was a kid in the 50's it was still that way. The actor Mark Harmon's dad, Tom Harmon, is a good example.

Everyone knew who Tom Harmon was, he was famous, a 'Living Legend', - a 'Football Star'. All from playing College Football (he did play Pro for a couple years). Even today I sometimes call Mark Harmon, Tom Harmon, when I'm talking about NCIS. That gets me a real odd look from my wife until I correct myself ;-)

Mark Harmon wasn't exactly a slouch at playing college football at UCLA either (QB). But nowhere like his dad was.

Tom Harmon's daughter, Mark's sister, married Ricky Nelson.
That was HUGH news back then.

Back in the days when the Rose Bowl could match up top teams.

Beating UCLA is one of my favorite things.
