No world leader has ever surpassed the accomplishments of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
So says actor Matt Damon, who plays rugby team captain Francois Pienaar in Clint Eastwood's Nelson Mandela film, "Invictus," which opens nationwide Friday.
Mandela convinced everybody to not go to war. That involves a lot of personal responsibility," Damon told Tarts at last weeks Los Angeles premiere. "South Africa had the greatest political leader in the world in our lifetime. Period.
The film covers the months in 1995 after Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa after decades of white apartheid rule, a time during which the country was close to devolving into civil war.
Damon says that Mandela couldn't save his country alone, though.
There was responsibility taken by the citizens as well, thats a lesson for the rest of the world about how to handle conflict.

MAAAAAT DAAAAMON
Wait, I’m taking notes...
Beard.
He’s only 39.
F. A. G.
Nelson Mandela, the commie, was a great leader? Of course it’s understandable since matty is a typical socialist elitist.
Translation: I did a movie, so it MUST be important!
Was that before or after he blew up trains??
So Loony Ben grew a beard and Matt couldn’t be friends with him anymore because he was starting to resemble a man?
>>>>Was that before or after he blew up trains??<<<<
Yeah but it was “for the people”.
I believe in contemporary vernacular, a "beard" is a woman who marries a gay man just to keep up appearances - it's very common in Hollywood circles.
A worthless commie, just like Damon.
Oh.... she is his ‘beard’ to make him look like a man. Got it.
As with most HollywoodCommies, I like his characters, but always try to tune him out when he speaks off camera as not to ruin it next time I see the movie.
Obummer is NOT amused!
I remember him as a communist leader, friend of our enemies, hated by the Zulu, etc.
The emancipation was good but not well done. For in the manner in which they did, South Africa dropped from one of the most modern, economically prosperous countries to a third world nation. The change did not need to ruin SA, but it did.
I bet this movie bombs worse than fat boy Moore’s Capitalism.
Ingredients for this bomb: Matt Damon is box office death, communist Mandela and soccer.
Not to mention the once prosperous South Africa is fast turning into Zimbabwe under the ANC.
...it’s not even soccer, it’s rugby. The audience this appeals to in the U.S. is like 500 people...and they all play on collegiate intramural rugby teams at liberal schools.
Too bad he couldn’t keep his wife’s posse from getting involved with that whole necklacing stuff.
Some observers believe that South Africa will follow the Zimbabwe model shortly after Mandela’s death.
For all his faults, SA would have been much worse without Mandela.
