VANITY: Is "Las Chicas de Moda" an appropriate name for a school chorus for girls?

Hi all. My 11 year old daughter has joined the girls chorus at her school. The chorus just decided its name will be "Las Chicas de Moda." My daughter doesn't like the name. She wanted it to be "Voces Scholasticae" (Latin for School Voices).

Question: does this name sound inapproriate? To me it sounds slutty. I've told her teacher we don't like the name but they are pretty much saying it's a done deal (the first concert just happened).

Any thoughts/comments/suggestions/linguistic or cultural analysis of "Las Chicas de Moda" would be great!

Ok, I see it means “Girls of Fashion”.

Not quite sure how that sounds “slutty” though. Most women who don’t wear burkas like fashion, my teenage and preteen daughters like fashion. Fashion doesn’t have to equal pole dancer.

Well, the website seems to be about hispanic models. Most models tend to be scantily clad for advertising lingerie or what have you. Although in the same respect, I wouldn’t my 11 year old daughter to be named “Victoria’s Secret” either.

However I don’t think you can say that the whole term “La Chicas de Moda means slutty because a website called that has fashion models and pop stars in tight outfits.

Maryland, and in particular the parts closest to Washington DC and Baltimore, such as Montgomery County and Prince George’s County have been completely overrun with Hispanics, the vast majority of which are illegal. Check out Riverdale, Maryland. It is a colony of Mexico. There is no English spoken there. There are, however, some good Mexican bakeries. Among the Central Americans, there is a huge and violent Mara Salvatrucha-MS 13 gang presence. There have been some outrageous crimes. Montgomery County has a sanctuary policy. The whole thing is a huge mess.

Huh?

Now you are off on a whole ‘nother tangent.

If that situation arises, handle it then. This isn’t Dreamgirls or something. It’s a school chorus group!

I see you are in Maryland. Why the heck is it in Spanish?

Yeah, why can't they use a good American name like "Voces Scholasticae"?

Why is it in Spanish? It is not inappropriate, but it is not serious or dignified. I suspect it is an attempt to make glee club seem “cool.” It also sounds like a vocal group that would be featured in a telenovela, the members of which would look like this (group called RBD, that is, rebellious):

I wonder if Mexico is an appropriate name for this country?

So I thought I’d see if any Moderator chicks are on duty this morning?

Send that first website to the teacher, principal, and supt. asking which uniform they decided on so you could order one for your daughter. That should wake the teacher up.

Doesn’t this mean “Fashion Girls” Silvie?

tellw, Silvie is FR’s resident hispanic authority and fellow Merrylander.

Doesn’t “Chica” mean something closer to “friend”? (Not “amiga”, but not merely “muchacha”? Maybe “homegirl”?)

I can see where “chicas” would sound slutty. But my objection is, why must everything be Spanish now? I guess it’s inevitable...we’re going to be a Spanish-speaking country. But I don’t have to like it.

Tell W,

Not to worry. “Las Chicas De Moda” is not controversial at all — nor is it a slutty name.

Not only does it mean “The Girls of Fashion”, but it also means something to the effect “The Girls of Here & Now” — technically meaning that these girls are in the “here & now”, but that doesn’t mean that they shed their traditions & values.

It is a good name — it’s cute. If I had a daughter in a dance troupe, I’d accept that name.

Good Luck!

Forgive me, it’s a Chorus — I thought it was a Dance Troupe.

It’s still appropriate.

There are, however, some good Mexican bakeries.

Surely you jest. "Good Mexican bakery" is an oxymoron. They make stuff that looks absolutely lovely, but tastes foul.

There are many items of Mexican cooking that I like, even some weird ones like chorizo (think "beef lips"), but baked goods ? Never !!

Well, La Flor de Puebla bakery Riverdale has wonderful bolillos, which are sort of like french rolls. They make the best sandwiches, molletes, etc. I am not big on the conchas and other sweet baked goods, that is, the pan dulces, but the bread is fantastic. The pan dulces are usually too dry and not dulce enough, except, maybe for the crispy orejas occasionally.
