• Bilingual Ballots Are a Bad Idea

At a time when many state and local governments cannot afford even necessary government programs, the Obama administration is about to force hundreds of jurisdictions to waste millions of dollars printing ballots in Spanish and other languages for voters who don't need them. Worse, some of these bilingual ballots may be used fraudulently to encourage people who are not citizens to vote illegally in next year's election. A perverse element of the Voting Rights Act makes the whole scheme possible, and, unfortunately, not even Republicans have been willing to challenge it. Under the Act, jurisdictions whose population includes at least...

This is an attempt to force the french language down the throats of non-french Canadians. Geographically and culturally, Alberta is about as far removed from Quebec as you can get. Caron's intentions - like many of the minority french Canadians - is to use all means possible to entrench their language, and by default their culture - into the lives of the Canadian English. The tactic is suspiciously similar to that used by other groups such as the followers of Islam and their attempts to install Sharia law on the majority. Great company to keep, Gilles.

But there are other, more radical - and in my mind, common sense - cuts that could and should be made in the interest of getting our economy back into good health. Of course, some of these suggestions may not be popular. Some may actually make some heads explode…
  • VANITY: Is "Las Chicas de Moda" an appropriate name for a school chorus for girls?

Hi all. My 11 year old daughter has joined the girls chorus at her school. The chorus just decided its name will be "Las Chicas de Moda." My daughter doesn't like the name. She wanted it to be "Voces Scholasticae" (Latin for School Voices). Question: does this name sound inapproriate? To me it sounds slutty. I've told her teacher we don't like the name but they are pretty much saying it's a done deal (the first concert just happened). Any thoughts/comments/suggestions/linguistic or cultural analysis of "Las Chicas de Moda" would be great!

We promise to keep French on our cereal boxes if we don’t have to subject our children to the joys of ‘French immersion’ programs in our schools. And no Celine Dion. Ever.

In a nation where around 25% of the citizens categorize themselves as ‘French’, and a province where that number is drastically lower than that, we find ourselves now force-fed a different language and a different culture. And people wonder why I am an Alberta separatist.

Immigration legislation puts fresh attention on teaching methods. LYNN, MASS., AND CHICAGO When Mark Chesley's seventh-grade science students understand what a prokaryotic cell does to reproduce, but not how to explain it, Mr. Chesley urges them to use their hands to illustrate the verb "pinching." Later, he teaches them to pronounce "binary fission." At Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Lynn, Mass., where student enrollment can ebb and flow with immigration patterns, lessons that might have taken Chesley a day to teach to native English speakers often span two or three days in the state's controversial Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) program....

"Of course not." That was Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' answer last Sunday on ABC's "This Week" when asked whether he would favor prohibiting bilingual ballots. "Of course not"? Did he mean, "This is not something about which decent people differ"? To understand why millions of conservatives do not trust Washington to think clearly or act reasonably about immigration, consider bilingual ballots. These conservatives, already worried that both the rule of law and national identity are becoming attenuated because of illegal immigration, now have another worry: The federal government's chief law enforcement official might need a refresher course on federal law...

A federal judge Friday ordered the Legislature to spend more money on education for students learning English and said he will impose fines starting at $500,000 a day late next month if deadlines aren't met. U.S. District Judge Raner C. Collins also ruled that the estimated 160,000 Arizona students learning English will be able to get high school diplomas without passing the state's graduation test until they've had time to prepare in adequately funded programs. Plaintiffs claim the state's AIMS test is unfair to students learning English because of shortcomings in programs intended to improve their skills in the language....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 3, 2005 Contact: Rob Toonkel rtoonkel@usenglish.org (202) 833-0100 Spanish Set to Become Official Language of Seven Denver Public Library Branches In a sharp break from American tradition, the Denver Public Library is promoting a plan that would make seven of its branches “Spanish focused,” banishing English language books to the backroom. The “Languages and Learning” plan would dramatically increase Spanish language offerings and staff, designating some locations as Spanish dominant. The proposal is currently under review by the Library Commission and an advisory board. “Denver’s action is a dubious first in American history: a major U.S....

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago, an English speaking country, has decided to that all of its citizens will speak Spanish by the year 2020. The idea is that if Trinidad is more linguistically compatible with Latin America there will be an increase in trade. Another alleged benefit is the possibility of luring the headquarters of the Free Trade Area of the Americas. The problem is that it is difficult for adults to learn a new language. Children, whose brains are still developing, can quickly are easily trained in foreign languages. But adults have a lot more trouble, and most...

Spanish order puts county in election bind Bilingual clerk requirements spur scramble to fill 269 posts BY JOHN REYNOLDS AVALANCHE-JOURNAL Increased federal scrutiny of the electoral process in the upcoming presidential election has Lubbock County officials scrambling to find up to 269 Spanish-speaking election clerks by November. Elections Administrator Dorothy Kennedy was notified Thursday of the new bilingual clerk requirements in a memo from Texas Secretary of State Geoffrey Connor. Training and staffing that number of election workers could cost as much as $27,000. However, County Commissioner James Kitten said he was less worried about the cost and more worried...

Revive the Conservative Revolution by Stephen Moore Posted May 21, 2004 This summer, the famous Contract With America that swept Republicans into power in Congress in January 1995 turns ten years old. The contract was a bold and sweeping agenda to change the way government works in Washington. It included 10 major provisions, including welfare reform, rules to force Congress to live under the same laws as the rest of us, term limits, tax cuts, and, most importantly, budget reduction. In the memorable words of Newt Gingrich, the Republican revolutionary who inspired and led the Contract With America Revolution, Republicans...

Outreach Program Lifts Barriers to Legal System Mobile clinics, translated documents and bilingual child care help ease the anxieties of Latinos intimidated by the courts. By Anna Gorman, Times Staff Writer Spanish speakers in Ventura County can hear radio tips about how to handle traffic tickets and small claims cases. In Fresno County, they can attend Spanish-language clinics on divorce and rental disputes. And throughout California, they can download child custody forms in Spanish. Superior Courts around the state are working to make the justice system more accessible by reaching out to Spanish speakers, many of whom do not have...

Sunshine state overtakes Ontario in number of francophones Graeme Hamilton National Post MONTREAL - Quebec is often described as an island of French in an English sea but new census data reveal the emergence of a second island, and this one has palm trees. Florida, long the recipient of a Speedo-clad French-Canadian diaspora, has overtaken Ontario as the North American jurisdiction with the most French-speakers outside Quebec. The dramatic increase in the number of people speaking French at home in Florida is largely attributable to a recent influx of Haitian immigrants, but French-Canadians still account for a large part of...

Are there any Freepers who are teaching English as a second language? I have just started my first class in the ESL teacher certification program at a Virginia public university. I am already completely disheartened at the leftist push toward bilingual instruction versus English immersion, with not even a pretense of balanced research to evaluate both methods. I fear the entire program is going to consist of political indoctrination. The rest of the students swallow and parrot the instructor's anti "Anglo" drivel. I would like to hear from anyone else who is in the same boat.....

Mediation in the lawsuit by El Paso displaced workers failed last week, leaving the parties to meet in court this winter and debate the adequacy of job training offered by the federal government, officials from the Catholic diocese and the Asociación de Trabajadores Fronterizos said Thursday. The suit, filed in April 2002 by six trade-displaced garment workers and the association, a workers advocacy group, accuses the Texas Workforce Commission, the Upper Rio Grande Workforce Development Board and the U.S. Department of Labor of not rising to NAFTA's expectations. The governmental agencies involved deny the workers' claims. "We feel we're taking...

Someone set Rita Montero's Volvo on fire as it sat parked in front of her Denver home last week. Maybe it's just a coincidence that she is leading the effort in Colorado to replace failing bilingual education programs with English immersion classes. But she doesn't think so, and neither do I. Colorado and Massachusetts are the two states where ballot initiatives this year will offer voters the chance to eliminate bilingual education, as California did in 1998 and Arizona in 2000.
