Circle of friends The importance of other people in our preparedness plans
Backwoods Home Magazine ^ | Dec. 17, 2009 | Claire Wolfe

Hardcore survivalists cherish what I call the "George Romero Scenario." It goes like this: The proverbial poop has hit the propeller. Cities collapse into chaos. But we, the prepared, are...well, we're prepared. We hunker in our rural bunkers, clutching our Super Whiz-Whacker 3000 combat arms, eagle-eyed and ready for any eventuality. We boldly fend off wave after ravenous wave of starving city folk who stagger at us like unstoppable zombies in a Romero horror flick. These zombies crave not our living flesh, but our six-gallon, mylar-lined superpails of dried lentils, our root cellars full of last year's carrots, and our genuine, federally issued Meals Ready to Eat.

Gotta love Claire. Gotta love the Romero references.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Preparedness is such a daunting task it’s hard to figure where to begin.

Case in point: I have an enviably well-prepared friend. Call him Bob. He has a ne'er-do-well, completely unprepared brother. For years Bob urged lazy bro at least to lay in a few supplies and build a few skills. Bro finally looked around and said, "Hey, don't worry about it. If anything goes wrong, I'll just move in with you."

The liberal mentality in a survival situation...

Here in NYC, if TSHTF a lot of people are gonna be screwed and defenseless and hungry and scared. Water will be at an absolute premium. Good luck with waste disposal.

Gotta come to grips with the fact that most of the city dwellers will simply kill each other off, and will not have the wherewithal to seek out the outlying survivalists.

Cities are essentially self-filling mortuaries.

We’ve actually got a few of those six-gallon pails stashed away. And our 72 hour kits are now staged and ready. Even at work, I’m never more than a few minutes from mine.

In our neck of the woods, it’s always been a bad idea for strangers to come up someone’s driveway unannounced. When the SHTF, it’ll be positively suicidal.

Preparedness should match where you live.

Where I live, if we have a meltdown, water will be better than gold.

I’m putting in a well and I’ll barter water for whatever I need.

I’m also laying in a supply of whiskey. I don’t drink, but it has a long shelf life and will work well as a trade good.

Think along the lines of what you can put together that will be in demand.

One important fact to remember: you have to sleep sometime. You cannot stay at Condition Red 24/7 for weeks. This means that you need people you can trust to keep watch while you sleep, eat, and try to get stuff done.

People tend to assume scenarios of human wave attacks of zombies. But what if the scenario involves one or a few zombies trying to hit you at random times over a period of months? In other words, not the end of the world, but a period of hard times that results in zombies being generated steadily over a long period?

we have two deep wells..Id just need a good pump to get it out if the electricity went out.

Wonder what we would need for that?

And I concur about the booze. People will always want hooch.

I’ll be the guy who pops a flare at the end of your driveway and then stands there with his hands in the air. LOL
