WASHINGTON - Call it the Terrible Teens. The decade ahead could be a brutal one for America's unemployed — and for people with jobs hoping for pay raises. At best, it could take until the middle of the decade for the nation to generate enough jobs to drive down the unemployment rate to a normal 5 or 6 percent and keep it there. At worst, that won't happen until much later — perhaps not until the next decade.

The deepest and most enduring recession since the 1930s has battered America's work force.

The unemployed number 15.4 million. The jobless rate is 10 percent. More than 7 million jobs have vanished. People out of work at least six months number a record 5.9 million. And household income, adjusted for inflation, has shrunk in the past decade.

Most economists say it could take at least until 2015 for the unemployment rate to drop down to a historically more normal 5.5 percent. And with the job market likely to stay weak, some also foresee another decade of wage stagnation

a decade of high unemployment and stagflation with promises of high energy costs (due to pending cap and trade legislation)... remind anyone of another recent democratic administration?

I’ll have to be asking my inlaws who voted Left in 2008 how they like their ‘hope and change’ economy.

I hope my candidate of choice, Sarah Palin, has some original solutions. Tell me if I’m wrong but I want to hear more than the “lower taxes” soundbite. That will not resonate enough to the desperate masses in 2012. And keep in mind I am a broken glass supporter (i.e. crawling over it to help her/vote for her).

The globalist elite gave America the ‘hope and change’ it did not want.

you aren’t entirely wrong. I’m all about lower taxes but I get pretty tired of listening to multi-millionaire Republicans telling me how tax cuts for multi-millionaires will cure all that ails America while they ignore every other tenet of conservatism. I saw McCain stump here in Ohio with Lindsey Graham. Seemed like all he had top promise was that he would give rich people tax breaks. There were thousands of middle class conservatives in attendance listening to these two and the applause was mostly polite. The general consensus was pretty obvious on election night I think.

As long as Americans leave it to the MSM and the LEFT to select candidates to run for election and to decide our political and our economic future, America will continue suffer decline.

Its very important for individuals to get fully involved locally, both politically and economically.

The taxes issue isn't about tax breaks to the rich, it is about sucking capital out of an economy.

When businesses, particularly small businesses, are taxed heavily, money that previously might have gone into expansion and hiring goes to the government. And when big spenders like Obama are in office, the threat of ever higher taxes (and add to that the threat of providing health care for all employees) scares small businesses away from implementing growth plans.

This is the reason we saw (last week) a reported explosion in the hiring of temps. Small businesses want to grow, but Obama is standing in the way by painting a vision of the future which is unpredictable at best and downright unfriendly to business at worst.

Small business is the economic engine that provides most of the jobs and Obama is killing it.

High unemployment is ENTIRELY Obama's fault because he could fix this problem immediately by changing the business environment for small businesses. The fact that he has a strong dislike for small business and has NO understanding of economics and how to create a safe, predictable growth-oriented environment for small businesses IS the problem here.

Oh and BTW, another reason "cutting taxes" is important (and Obama doesn't understand this either) is that it isn't "taxes" that are cut, it is "tax rates".

Reducing "tax rates" to optimum levels actually causes an increase in "tax revenues," not a reduction.

My best guess is that there will be between 6 and 10 million more people out of work within the next couple of years. Sooner or later, the debt-for-import games run out of play.

Personally, I think one of the best things America could do regarding taxes would be to implemet a flat tax. The graduated income tax just pits us all against each other. Another nice change to the status quo would be a constitutional ammendment that forces the government to balance the budget every year and denies them the right to spend more than they take in. ever. for anything. They clearly can’t be trusted with credit under any circumstances.

Ok here’s the deal. Sarah Palin, if she runs, should literally memorize your post or something very close to it (or even parts of it) and recite it when the time comes.

That’s what I’m looking for, a little depth with expediency! Not the old “we must grow our economy and cut taxes”, yeah no duh, we’ve heard that on the trail since 2000. We need it said in the way that you said it, same meaning but fresher delivery with more substance.

Sarah I hope you or one of your people are listening. And btw, the main reason I am for Sarah isn’t cause she’s “purdy”, it isn’t cause she “is just like us” and it isn’t because I’m some starstruck groupie. It’s because I believe she alone has the dynamism and conviction to beat the enemy-in-chief.

I'll vote for her too, but the message of 'lower taxes' is a losing proposition precisely because the majority of people don't pay 'taxes'; in fact, they receive back more than they 'pay' in.

When you count the underwhelmingly low rate they pay for incomes below the national median income, EIC, AFDC, EBTs, SSI, and all of the other 'grants' and special assistance programs set aside for them, all they have to gripe about are payroll taxes (SS and Medicare). And, for that, the remedy is upping your deductions - why not, there's no penalty for them - they get money back!

He has to be hit on his miserable economy and joblessness. He has to be hit on healthcare; scare the blue hairs to death about his death panels. They have to worry about having to eat cat food in order to save enough for their medicine "if" the government will allow them to have it

He has to be hit on terrorism (or his lack of its definition and admitting it exists). He has to be hit on GM and Chrysler and the loss of union jobs (we must all NOT buy any GM or Chrysler product)- Buy Ford.

Lastly, he has to be hit on religion, his Muslim leanings and submission to thereof. He's not a Christian, doesn't go to church, doesn't respect our nation, our troops, or our way of life, period. He needs to be shown for what he is.
