Is Canned Food Safe to Eat?

Last week, someone mentioned the Bisphenol A (BPA) leaching tendencies of canned tomatoes. That was all it took to send me on a tear.

First, I looked deeper into the BPA issue. I’ve mentioned it before, and the battles over BPA content in plastics have gotten a lot of publicity, but after looking at the preponderance of evidence derived from recent animal trials, I’m not sure I can recommend using canned food at all anymore. Industry leaders say BPA is crucial for preventing direct contact between food and metal; they also say ditching the stuff would lead to far more botulism cases. That may be. But it’s undeniable that BPA has an effect on animals. Various dosages have different effects, and it’s unclear whether the animal models are relevant to human models, but the stuff does leach and it does impact the mammals that have been tested. A quick rundown (these are rodent studies unless otherwise noted) of dosages in µg/kg/day and the reported effects:

0.025 – Permanent changes to genital tracts in adult females with in utero exposure to BPA that only show up during adulthood.

1.0 – Ovarian cysts were seen in adult mice with prenatal exposure to BPA

2.0 – Pregnant mice fed normal levels of (read: in doses similar to the range “currently being consumed by people”) BPA, but not octylphenol (another xenoestrogen used in commercial products), bore males that developed enlarged prostates by adulthood.

2.4 – BPA exposures of pregnant rats (from gestation day 12 onward) and nursing rats (up until postnatal day 21) resulted in decreased testosterone levels in the testicles by nearly half.

2.5 – Given no further “treatment aimed at increasing tumor development” beyond fetal BPA administration, mice mammary glands were induced to develop carcinoma. Mice with prenatal exposure, then, were predisposed to breast cancer in adulthood.

10.0 – In male rats, low levels of BPA exposure affected the prostate epigenome (“genetic code” of the prostate), enough to render it especially susceptible to disease later in life. In female mice, exposure to BPA resulted in altered maternal behavior: BPA mothers expressed less interest in nursing and more time away from their pups when compared to the control corn oil group.

30.0 – A BPA dosage far below the human “tolerable daily intake” was apparently not tolerated especially well by rats; BPA “abolished and inverted” sexual differentiation of the brain and behavior.

50.0 (the official U.S. human exposure limit, as ordained by the EPA) – In nonhuman primates, continuous administration of BPA interfered in the formation of spine synapses in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Spine synapse formation is especially critical in the regulation of mood and general cognition; government-approved levels of BPA were enough to “abolish” synapse formation in some of our closest primate relatives.

Not certian if I can quote the entire article, however the data contained here is enough to make me probably never eat DelMonte canned green beans again.

Based on the above findings, now check out the pdf!

This pdf chart is linked in the article, but provided it here for quick reference... http://buysafeeatwell.org/blog/data/buysafeeatwell.org-bpa_table-2009_11_02.pdf

Why eat canned beans when you can eat the frozen stuff?

So, eating frozen foods in plastic is better?

Are we saying that every transgendered/homosexual/bisexual has its roots in BPA?

Stay away from monsanto soy beans and corn. Corn syrup is not bad for you because it is concentrated sugar. It is a GMO product.

People have been eating canned food for at least a century and a half. Average lifespan has increased amazingly.

I doubt canned food is going to kill us all, in other words.

"I’m not sure I can recommend using canned food at all anymore."

Well, Mark, how many people were asking for your recommendation before you published this?

I have a lot of things in my life that are more hazardous to me than eating food that comes in cans.

Including being 67 and preparing to get rationed health care.

Frankly, I love GMO food.

I always say, if it's not Frankenfood it's probably contaminated in some manner no one understands yet.

Yeh, you know, thats what me and the guys down at the shop were saying to each other just the other day.
As we breathed in fumes from a dyno and scraped cow manure off our boots and downed our tenth beer while sucking on a cigar, we discussed the harmfull effects of canned tomatoes.

God people are wusses.

Figures this report came out right after that! Ugh! Honestly, I don't care.. I'm going to keep buying canned green beans and corn!

And of course even the one study cited says they cannot extrapolate to humans. Look this stuff has been around for 50 plus years. Now if you want to suggest that like saccharin this is somehow the cause of everything bad in our environment have at it. Once again the food police want to make sure that you only consume what they want you to eat

I prefer fresh or flash frozen vegetables myself but I like an occassional soda or fruit juice. Sometimes I want something out of season at a reasonable price.

I’m with you on that! Either fresh or frozen for me, but i do eat soup and the numbers for soup are bad too. Intersesting to see Waxman stinking up the matter too.

BPA comes from the plastic used now to line cans with,I agree that they should use old fashioned tin or other noncorrosive metals to line the cans. Buy glass jars or can your own.
