Boy with long hair may leave school

MESQUITE, Texas, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- The parents of a Texas 4-year-old whose hair was declared a violation of school dress code said they may remove him from the school.

Ian Halprin, a spokesman for Mesquite Independent School District, said Wednesday Taylor Pugh -- who has been receiving one-on-one instruction in the Floyd Elementary School library since his hair was declared a violation of district dress code late last year -- could be placed in in-school suspension or in the school office and lose his individual instruction as early as next week, The Dallas Morning News reported Thursday.

The boy's parents, Delton Pugh and Elizabeth Taylor, said in response they may simply keep the boy home from his pre-kindergarten class. They said they have no intention of cutting the boy's hair.

District dress code guidelines do not allow for boys to wear hair long enough to reach past their shirt collars.

"If he's not supervised, if he's not learning, there's no reason to leave him there," the boy's mother said.

The parents said Taylor can't wear his hair in braids, a compromise offered by the district, because it hurts his scalp.

I saw the mother interviewed on the news. If the kid is twice as smart as the mother he will still be stupid.

From a different article:

“I don’t think it’s right to hold a child down and force him to do something,” Mr. Pugh, a tattoo artist, told The Associated Press. “It’s not hurting him or affecting his education.”

First of all, the parents want a 4 year old to be able to not only dictate to them what he will and will not do, but an entire school district must conform to him.

Second, what's a 4 year old doing in a government school in the first place?

Third, if they feel so strongly about the long hair and the education of a 4 year old, take him out of the school and home school him.

I had to look twice to make sure I was at Free Republic. A government-run school tells a family to cut their son's hair and everyone here rallies around the school district? Over hair length?

C'mon people!

I wouldn’t let my son’s hair grow that long, but I also woudln’t want the government to tell me how long it should be.

Actually, many of the founding fathers had hair of a similar length.

Do they have a minimum hair length for girls?

If the kid’s hair isn’t dangerous or disruptive the gubmint should mind its own business.

This was not a battle worth fighting. Schools have a right to have dress codes. The kid needs to learn about rules.

With all due repsect, I think you have it backwards. The government school is trying to force the kid and parents to conform to it. The kid is not trying to dictate how long any other student’s hair should be.

How does this kid’s hair harm anyone else? It is not even that long. If it is not dangerous or disruptive, the government should mind its own business.

This is Statism run wild, IMHO.

Good lesson to teach a kid ... your hair and your right to “express yourself” is more important than your education. And, if you don’t get your way, pitch a hissy fit.

Cut his damn hair.

No you are wrong! The goverment has the right to dictate how long a child’s hair should be, what type of health coverage every citizen must purchase, the maximum salary an American can earn, how much CO2 we can emit, and anything else it wants! /sarc
