In fact, the Germans did continue to work on their "Amerika Bomber" projects throughout the war.

"Possibly the first public reference to the Amerika Bomber was on July 8, 1938 in a speech by Hermann Göring saying, "I completely lack the bombers capable of round-trip flights to New York with a 4.5-tonne bomb load. I would be extremely happy to possess such a bomber which would at last stuff the mouth of arrogance across the sea."

Canadian historian Holger H. Herwig claims the plan started as a result of discussions by Hitler in November of 1940 and May of 1941 when he stated his need to “deploy long-range bombers against American cities from the Azores.” "

"The Fw 200 was built to a Lufthansa specification with Wilhelm Bansemir as project director. It first flew in July 1937 after just under one year of development with Kurt Tank at the controls. The aircraft was a simple development of a pre-war commercial craft. It was an all-metal construction, four-engined monoplane capable of carrying 25 passengers up to 3,000 km (1,860 mi)."

"The Junkers 290 was developed directly from the Ju 90 airliner, versions of which had been evaluated for military purposes, and was intended to replace the Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor which by 1942 was proving increasingly slow and vulnerable when confronted by RAF aircraft over the "narrow seas" around Europe. It was also intended to meet the need for large transport aircraft. A bomber version, the A-8, was planned, but never built."

"The Messerschmitt Me 264 Amerika was a long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft developed during World War II for the German Luftwaffe. It was intended to support U-boat operations far into the Atlantic, serving both as a scout to direct the attack, as well as launching attacks of its own.

"The design was later selected as a competitor in the Reichsluftfahrtministerium's (the German Air Ministry) "Amerika Bomber" programme, which intended to develop a strategic bomber capable of attacking New York City from bases in France or the Azores, although it is highly doubtful that this would have been achieved with a meaningful payload, if at all."

"The Blohm & Voss BV 238 was a German flying boat designed in World War II. It was the heaviest aircraft ever flown when it first flew in 1944, and physically was the largest aircraft produced by any of the Axis powers in World War II."

"The Dornier Do 214 was a large long-range flying boat developed by Dornier in World War II.

"The mammoth eight-engine design was intended for use as a military transport, with a large bow door admitting vehicles and bulky freight to the upper deck. It was also designed for use as a long-range bomber, flying tanker, aerial minelayer and U-boat supply vessel. By 1943, it was realized that long-range flying boats were not needed due to the worsening war situation, and the Do 214 project was canceled."

In Germany ... Hitler decides to cancel the German attack in the west until the spring. The possible compromising of the plan for the attack at Mechelen on January 10th and the continuing bad weather are the principal reasons.

In France... Sixty-six Communist members are ejected from the Chamber of Deputies.

In Angers... A report which vividly describes Nazi atrocities in Poland is presented to the Polish government-in-exile in France. It contains graphic accounts of public executions, forced labor, looting and hostage-taking on a vast scale. In Poznan, for example, the German occupation forces are said to have shot 5000 Poles. Thousands more are being held in makeshift concentration camps. Mass arrests of prominent Poles are commonplace and Germans are said to take precedence over Poles for food, clothes and housing. The Jews and Gypsies in Nazi-occupied Poland are said to suffer brutal persecution and indignities.

Finland to receive a railway wagonload of food aid from Denmark

• Central Isthmus: heavy enemy shelling pounds the defences on the Mannerheim Line in Summa.

• Ladoga Karelia: in temperatures of -41° Celsius, a small Finnish detachment attacks and halts the enemy advance at the edge of Mursula village in Kitilä.

• The Finnish aid agency Suomen Huolto grants 800,000 markkaa in aid to victims of the bombing in the towns of western Finland.

• Abroad: a special Finnish day is to be held at the Holmenkollen skiing games in Oslo to raise money for Finland.

• A Danish association of factory-owners is sending a railway wagonload of food aid to Finland.

• United States President, Franklin D. Roosevelt says the USA can extend a non-military loan to Finland as this would in his opinion not compromise US neutrality.

• The Swiss Medical Association announces it is to send a group of volunteers to Finland.
