Uranus may have Melting and Resolidifying Diamond Oceans
Discovery News ^ | Jan 2010 | Eric Bland

Oceans of liquid diamond, filled with solid diamond icebergs, could be floating on Neptune and Uranus, according to a recent article in the journal Nature Physics.

The research, based on first detailed measurements of the melting point of diamond, found diamond behaves like water during freezing and melting, with solid forms floating atop liquid forms. The surprising revelation gives scientists a new understanding about diamonds and some of the most distant planets in our solar system.

He wasn’t a “Lizard Man”, he was a Gorn. It’s it’s a damn good thing Kirk didn’t kill him out because the Metrons would have taken out the Enterprise.

Well, she can count herself lucky, because I swear one of my old friends made his newlywed wife dress up like the green chick and dance for him dressed as Capt. Kirk.

By the way, the lizard man was supposed to be Capt. Kirk’s equal in the lizard world.

But I preferred the rock monster.

This guy's already on his way to Uranus to kick some alien butt and bring back the diamonds!

Did the Metrons invent the metronome?

And if so — does that mean they are related to the time-keepers from Remulac?

Last I heard carbon did not have a liquid phase, wouldn’t it just go right into gas/vapor?

On the first of many planet stops (Preplanus), Dr. Smith put extra blasting charges in the hole Major West was drilling to shake the diamonds loose from the walls in a nearby cave. It didn’t work out so well.

It’s going to be a special day when we can pull diamonds out of Uranus. Normally you have to go to prison to find a drilling platform capable of such a deed.

There was a Dr. Who episode that took place on a diamond planet!!!

The planet was called Midnight (the episode had the same name).

I know uranus does not always produce consistent results, sometimes solid, sometimes liquid, but always gas.

"Yet I would trade them all for a hand phaser, or a good solid club."

And the Lizard King was a "Gorn".

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

“How are such high temps generated so far away from the sun?”

The spinning motion of gas giant planets such as Uranus and Neptune generates a lot of energy. Combine that with their immense gravitational fields and the result is the ability to create areas of extreme temperature and pressure.

Graphite and diamond molecules are both 100% carbon. The difference is the manner in which the carbon atoms within the molecules are arranged.
